Monumental carved, winged altarpieces are the most ambitious artworks from the Middle Ages, incorporating the skills of painters, sculptors, and cabinetmakers. Those that are most notable for their artistic originality and masterly execution were produced in the southern German-speaking regions, including Austria and South Tirol, in the last decades of the Late Gothic period (roughly 1460 to 1525). By that time altarpieces had evolved from low, fixed panels to large wooden structures with rich architectural ornamentation. Paintings of the saints often adorned the movable wings, while carved reliefs or freestanding sculptures of scenes from the Gospels occupied the gilded, center shrine.
Rainer Kahsnitz offers a close examination of twenty-two of the most important surviving altarpieces, discussing the historical context in which they were made and analyzing how their pictorial programs reflect changing notions of piety. The sumptuous color illustrations capture the altarpieces in all their possible arrangements. The stunning details of these pieces--riotous locks of hair, swirling fabric, and thickets of twisted vines--vividly demonstrate the consummate skill of the master artisans who created them.

Review
"Achim Bunz's photographs masterfully capture the inward expressivity and exhilarating woodwork of the sculpture of Riemenschneider, Veit Stoss, and others in 22 churches throughout present-day Germany and Austria. Rarely does one see a book of such stark, moving beauty."--Book Forum

carved splendour
By Ivor E. Zetler
This sumptuously illustrated book concerns the history of late gothic altarpieces. These complex structures, normally requiring a team of sculptors, painters and joiners for their creation, were present in abundance in the middle ages. Sadly many were destroyed for various reasons and few survive intact. This book, well translated from the original German edition, presents 22 of the finest remaining examples.
The beginning of the book clearly presents a history (which is complicated in itself) of gothic altarpieces. These structures had a wings on each side which were normally kept closed. These wings were normally decorated with paintings depicting biblical scenes. On special religious occasions the wings were opened to reveal lavish wooden sculptural compositions. In the earlier period these sculptures were gilded or painted. Around 1490, it became the norm to have the wood undecorated.
The superb photography presents the altarpiece initially in its closed state, then the wings are seen open and lastly there are illustrations of the normally concealed sculptural centrepiece. These are invariably of great beauty and demonstrate the highest level of craftsmanship. The detail photos of the unpainted wood sometimes show evidence of significant damage from woodworm infestation.
This is a magnificently produced volume that would be of interest to enthusiasts of this era and art in general. Look out for the equally worthwhile book entitled 'Gothic and Renaissance Altarpieces"

A magnificent book
By Graham Williams
This is a book that leaves one breathless and uplifted.
The quality of the printing and presentation is very good which enhances one's enjoyment.
The photography is superb and enables one to appreciate the splendours of the carvings; the tormented figures of Christ, the anguish and joy of medieval believers, the richness and complexities of faith.
This is a book that one will return to again and again to linger over and to study.
Carved Splendor, indeed!
