Great linguistic book for teachers

Freeman & Freeman have hit a great niche with their book. I don't want or need, a complex linguistics book in the style of Chomsky. Freeman & Freeman take language research and package the relevant "real-world" findings so they will be of use for teachers. Although my interest is for English as a Second (ESL) teachers, I believe every teacher is concerned with literacy, and Freeman & Freeman's book covers what teachers need to know concerning phonics v. whole word instruction, spelling, and grammar. Freeman & Freeman seem to belong to the Stephen Krashen school of language and reading. This is a plus for me, but for Krashen-haters, it probably wouldn't be, and they should look elsewhere. This is "baby" linguistics book--you won't get a section on Chomsky's generative grammar here. I think it would be a good companion volume along with VanPatten's "From Input to Output"--which is a slim volume solely concerned with second language acquisition and has the same conversational tone--and--this is important--their teaching advice and philosophy meshes.

Good if you are a staunch whole language believer

I picked up this book from a university bookstore because I was interested in background knowledge in linguistics to help guide reading instruction. This book is a typical "we are right (whole language) and you are wrong (phonics)" debate. The authors refer to themselves as "sociopsycholinguists" which I took to be the new term for whole language teachers. I don't want to waste my time reading about the whole language vs. phonics debate anymore, I just wanted the research and background provided by linguistic study. This book just seemed to be a rehashing of whole language theories; and why they are correct and the phonics approach is wrong with little classroom strategies (which is what I wanted from the book). I wanted different ways I could use to help struggling readers no matter what the theory, I don't feel this was a good book for that.

This is a textbook?

Not really impressed with this book. It was a required text and I've been disappointed in it's content. When discussing the why we use sound to communicate, the best the authors could come up with is "..to talk in the dark and to talk around corners." The authors present stronger material in working with ELL students but weak on linguistics. As a textbook, this a bad choice as a teaching source. The up & coming ELL teachers should look for other material.

Morris is particularly good at tracing the neurological and social origins of religion

This is a commendably deep probe of religion, from the earliest days of people sitting around the cave fire in furs, up to the “modern” age when many of the old superstitions have survived intact. Morris is particularly good at tracing the neurological and social origins of religion. He got me thinking hard about where it comes from and the reasons it survives.

Not content with mere analysis, Morris shows us the rationalist alternative and how it works in the progressive nations of Northern Europe. Why is Australia such a laggard? How can the country get rid of the habitual kow-towing to religious institutions and a non-secular education system? This writer has convincing answers, plus some great action ideas.

this book should be the sylabus text book for any one studying religion and compulsory for everyone else .

I found it challenging to read the first time and could only cope with about 20 pages at a time . mainly because I got so angry and depressed about australia’s future and australians in general . and also there is so much to think about , you need a break to absorb and think about what you have just read .

in reading the book a 3rd time I now have time to follow the extensive references and source material . the references are very easy to find and there are also internet links on the website [...]

Fantastic, Amazing Coaching Book with Incredible amount of Content!!

I also have the FC Barcelona: A Tactical Analysis Attacking and Defending Books which are fantastic if you want the full tactical blueprint of what I believe is the best club side to play the game. Those books analyse each phase of the game and every conceivable game situation. I cannot fathom how long it must have taken to produce these books with so much detail.

I was so happy when this book (FC Barcelona Training Sessions - 160 Practices from 34 Tactical Situations) was released because I really wanted full sessions to go along with the analysis. I was not disappointed as this book contains some of the finest practices and progressive sessions I have ever seen. The amount of content provides great value for money and this book really is a must have for any coach.

The sessions begin with the technical breakdown of Barca's play and progress to new and innovative possession games, transition games and small sided games. Each session focuses on a specific phase of play and game situation, such as RECEIVING IN BEHIND THE MIDFIELD LINE AND APPROACHING THE THIRD STAGE OF ATTACK and RETAINING BALANCE DURING THE ATTACKING PHASE: THE DEFENSIVE MIDFIELDER’S ROLE.

What I find most incredible about this book is that it teaches the technical side of the game so well, but also covers every tactical situation you can think of and teaches you about team shape, cohesion at all times to prepare for the transition phase and each player's role and responsibilities.

To have all this information in one book (every phase including the transition phase) means you have a complete training program for your team in the mold of Guardiola's great side.

One of the best coaching books ever!

The authors previous books; "FC Barcelona: A Tactical Analysis - Attacking and Defending" provides full extensive analysis of FCB pattern of plays in all 4 phases of the game, the detail is incredible.

With this sequel book, the author has taken FC Barcelona's most common 34 tactical game situations (pattern of plays that happened a lot and FCB main characteristics in their style of play) and follows a full session on how to practice it.

The analysis is presented very well which is easy to understand and follow. What makes this book so great is the sessions that follow then game situations are presented with clear diagrams and each drill is progressive with many variations.

Although conceptually simple, the study of multi-sensor data fusion presents challenges that are unique within the education of the electrical engineer or computer scientist. To become competent in the field the student must become familiar with tools taken from a wide range of diverse subjects including: neural networks, signal processing, statistical estimation, tracking algorithms, computer vision and control theory. All too often the student views multi-sensor data fusion as a miscellaneous assortment of different processes which bear no relationship to each other. In this book the processes are described using a common statistical framework. As a consequence, the underlying pattern of relationships that exists between the different methodologies is made evident.

The book is illustrated with many real-life applications and contains an extensive list of modern references. It is accompanied by a webpage from which supplementary material may be obtained, including support for course instructors and links to relevant matlab code.

CAMILLA D'ERRICO is a product of her early addiction to Saturday morning cartoons, comics, and manga. Her client list includes Dark Horse Comics, Image Comics, Random House, Tokyopop, Hasbro, Disney, Sanrio, and Neil Gaiman. Her own characters and properties, Tanpopo and the Helmetgirls, are international sensations, and her emotive paintings have propelled her to the top of the ranks of the New Contemporary art movement. "Whenever I’m creating a new character, I always start with the eyes. You get all the emotion from the eyes; they are the gateway to the character’s soul. Eyes are the manga artist’s catchphrase or calling card. Next time you’re reading Naruto, Chobits, or even Vampire Knight—some of my personal favorites—take a look at the characters’ eyes and notice the differences in the style and execution. Each manga artist has a signature way of drawing eyes. My eyes are “circle eyes,” and that’s the style you’re about to learn. But I want you to take the steps I teach you and run with them, altering them to match your own style and your own characters’ personalities. Remember, it’s your signature, so have fun!"

Great book, and a solid choice for beginners. Just some additional info below.

I wanted to incorporate some Manga elements into some of my cartooning, so I picked up this book along with four others. This seems like one of the best. A few pros/cons

Pros:
- To start with, the book is gorgeous. There's tons of color and great illustrations. The physical quality of the paper and the printing is excellent as well. You could almost leave it out as a coffee table book.
- Strikes a good balance between starting at the beginning and talking down to the reader. Some of the books I've found (even beginner ones) assume skills that aren't really universal. Others seem to want to start by explaining what a pencil is. This one started at the beginning but was challenging.
- There is a nice progression. The book takes you through various aspects of a finished drawing piece by piece, breaking it down in a very logical way.
- Includes some very cool topics not really approached in other books. Specifically, non humans. It's nice to see them tie some drawing basics into something a lot of other books handle as almost "mysterious."
- The drawings in this book seemed much more polished than those in some of the other books. It's hard to describe exactly what i mean, but in some of the others, the end product is more "cartoony" than I would have liked. Sort of a silly criticism to make of a book about Manga, but it's the best way I can describe the difference. A lot of other books have artwork that just seems flat.

Cons:
- I say this about every single drawing book, so I don't take stars off for it, but why can't they make these coil/spiral binds? Every single person using this book is going to want to have it open while they have their hands busy with the lesson they are working on at the time, why not set it up to lie flat. Just a pet peeve, but I'm hoping someday a publisher might notice (Pro tip: you can get things coil bound at fed ex kinko's for five bucks or so, well worth the frustration you'll save).
- There was a lot of included artwork that, while gorgeous and interesting, wasn't really helpful to actually learning anything. I really enjoyed it, so I'm not taking stars off for it, but I could see someone feeling like the book wanders from the point a little.

If you are interested in learning some Manga techniques, this book is an excellent choice.

Well worth the money

When it comes to art, I'm kinda like that lady that started in her 60's. (Only subtract about 20 years.) I didn't take any art classes in high school because I didn't think that I could draw. I have since learned different. The reason that I say this is because my primary study has been through internet videos and books. I was looking for a book that would really teach the basics of Manga. This book does that. This is the second book I have bought in the quest for a beginner's book and the first that worked in that capacity. The other was good but it really assumed too much. Camilla D'Errico's book doesn't make those same assumptions. The writing is witty and informative. The information on drawing hands is worth the price of the book all by itself. Unlike other artists, she loves drawing hands and makes it super easy to follow and learn. Usually when you have an art book reading it isn't really high on your list of things to do, but I suggest reading hers. It is pithy and friendly. She has this great little smart aleck character named Inku that gives tips and tricks throughout the book.

I don't know what else to say to convince an individual this is worth the price. Note: there are some incredible stand alone illustrations of her drawings that just inspire. Thanks for reading.

Great reading, and immediate help for people new to drawing manga styles.

If you're a fan of pop surrealism or lowbrow, and if you ever wanted to hear the voice of a prominent artist in that field, this is the book for you. Camilla is so conversational, it feels a lot like having e-mail with a friend. If you're a collector, or fan, of Camilla D'Errico, you must have this book! If not, but you're a fan of manga and anime and would like lessons that will have immediate impact on your art, you can't pass this book up.

About the Author

Gerald R. McDermott is the Jordan-Trexler Professor of Religion at Roanoke College, Distinguished Senior Fellow at the Baylor Institute for Studies of Religion, and Research Associate at the Jonathan Edwards Centre, University of the Free State, South Africa. His other books include God's Rivals:Why Has God Allowed Different Religions?

Harold A. Netland is Professor of Philosophy of Religion and Intercultural Studies at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School. He taught at Tokyo Christian University prior to coming to Trinity in 1993. Among his publications are Dissonant Voices: Religious Pluralism and the Question of Truth and Encountering Religious Pluralism.

Yoshiyuki Sadamoto, one of the founding members of the animation powerhouse Studio Gainax, is the character designer for THE WINGS OF HONNEAMISE, NADIA, NEON GENESIS EVANGELION the animated series, and many other anime, illustration and art projects. His latest art book, DER MOND, is also available in English translation from VIZ Media. NEON GENESIS EVANGELION is Sadamoto's only full-length manga series.

Nice book for the anime and manga fans of the series

[[VIDEOID:mo2ZHW6670C6R7J]]Der Mond: The Art of Neon Genesis Evangelion is just one of the many books on the popular anime. Many of them are in Japanese. This is one that's translated to English by publisher Viz Media. It's a larger than usual art book, hardcover, 120 pages and reads from right to left.

It collects the art of Yoshiyuki Sadamoto ('' ''), the Japanese artist who created the characters for Evangelion. The pages are filled with huge beautiful prints. If you collect the manga series, you'll find some pieces familiar because they are the chapter splash pages. Most of the art are character based, and there are also some sketches which I like.

It's not all Evangelion art though. Towards the back there are also illustrations from other projects like games and other anime. The only I recognise is Fatal Fury fighting game. The others are The Wings of Honneamise, Leiqunni Nondelaiko, Nadia of the Mysterious Seas, Aoki Uru and others. There's even an album cover for Eric Clapton.

There isn't any commentary beside the credits for the illustrations.

Nice book for the anime and manga fans of the series.

Gorgeous, super-sized art book with bonus material!

Original-series artwork with conceptual art and other works thrown in! This book was somewhere in-between an illustration-only volume like the Art of Satoshi Kon (Dark Horse Entert.) and a Ghibli Art Book, which is a nice mix. Very high quality print, as expected. Some background is given to each image, and the bonus concept art is nicely packaged last in the book so the reader/viewer can appreciate the art style development and artistic context. Also, this art book is HUGE! I had to move my shelf down a good few centimeters to fit it in with my 30~some other art books - some of which I thought were large to begin with. Be sure to check the size specs before you buy - although I certainly think it's worth owning regardless of storage inconvenience.

The Most Beautiful

Absolutely breath taking. A must have for any true Neon Genesis Evangelion fan or of Yoshiyuki Sadamoto. It takes you to the eyes of the artist himself. In the back of the book it has written detail of mostly of Yoshiyuki Sadamoto himself. His words help on what was going on in his head during his work on Neon Genesis Evangelion and other projects he did. It also tells you things that you might not have known during the production of the anime like early designs, early character name concepts, and early thoughts of Yoshiyuki Sadamoto and Hideaki Anno. This is truly for the fans!!!
