The author draws upon a variety of literature ranging from biblical stories to political legends and speeches to illustrate the catalog of virtues--self-discipline, compassion, work, responsibility, friendship, courage, perseverance, honesty, loyalty, faith--that he believes are foundational to strong moral character. Most selections are introduced by a short thematic note, e.g., "an honest heart will always find friends." Bennett's elevation of these virtues to moral absolutes renders the book's view of morality rather simplistic. In addition, the collection's lack of attention to women's and non-Western voices encourages the view that the experience of virtue belongs primarily to Western males. Still, this anthology will prove popular with some readers. Recommended for public libraries.

Proof is in the pudding

After a long week of bike riding practice without the training wheels which culminated in a solo trip down the street, my 6 year old daughter made a proud, smiling request on the way up to bed. "Can we read 'Try try again' in the big green book?" She asked. The big green book is of course the Book of Virtues, and "Try try again" is one of the many poems and short stories that we read from it before bed each night. This book is full of life stories that kids can remember and apply as they grow. On several other occasions those stories have come into conversation as a reference point with my kids when facing life's experiences. Highly recommended.

I grew up reading this anthology of virtues as a child. Bennett pulled together a wonderful collections of stories and classic examples through which important morals are illustrated for the reader. This book made such an impression on me that I have bought copies for each of my nephews and neices so that they too can read and learn what it means to be a person of strong moral character.

Fair coverage of a broad subject

The adhesion between different materials is something people rarely consider when they think of science or engineering, yet few subjects are more important to practicioners in so many fields such as biology, materials science, chemistry, construction, medicine, etc... This book takes a big stab at trying to describe the studies of adhesion between different classes of materials such as polymers, metals, ceramics, and even biological organisms. The book also includes a chapter on the modeling of adhesion at the atomic scale. As such, it is worth reading... but the problems arise in that each chapter is written by a different author(s) and one clearly notices the biasness of each author towards the research they do. Each of the different topics end up focusing on a few test cases. For example, the section on metal - ceramic adhesion deals with really one ceramic, alumina, even though many metal - ceramic couples are being studied quite extensively. Because of this, I would not recommend this book as an introduction to the field. It does make a good reference for those who work with adhesion.

The author has displayed a full knowledge of appropriate methodology and comprehensive approach to the subject.

Although the content is limited to the UK case, the book is full of overwhelming information for an expert who wants to compare the cases with other developments elsewhere.

It is an example of "country study" for the shopping centre industry that should be repeeated by other writers in other markets.

About the Author
Professor Senft's main research interests lie in the mathematical analysis of mechanisms and heat engines, with an emphasis on the Stirling engine. He has published over forty papers and several books in these areas. He currently teaches at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls, but he has also been a visiting research professor at the University of Rome, the University of Washington Joint Center for Graduate Study, the University of Zagreb, and the University of Calgary. He has been a visiting fellow at the Australian National University Institute of Advanced Study, and a visiting scientist at Argonne National Laboratory. He has received research grants from the Charles A. Lindbergh, Fulbright, and the National Science Foundations, and is a consultant to the U.S. Department of Energy and NASA.

I really like Prof. Senft's work. This book is no exception. The mathematics he goes through have enormous implications, but are very simple to follow (if you take the time to fully understand his notation). Overall a great book.

As a newcomer to the HVAC industry I found the book to very informative...it was presented in such a way, however, that makes it very hard to read. SMACNA puts out a few manuals that are less "dry" and a lot easier to read. I would recommend that anyone who is interested in this publication to have some general knowledge of the HVAC industry in order to make understanding this book easier.

Not as expected.

I found this book informative rather than practical as implemented by publisher to be a working tool primarily for desingers. People with basic knowlege of HVAC might enjoy reading this book to get some general but not in-depth engineering knowlege of HVAC systems, but there is not much for designers who need analytical information and knowledge of calculation procedures.

This book is aimed at the engineering design professional but I found it to be a major disapointment. There are a number of good texts available on this subject but this one, like so many of Roger Haines' other books, is a superficial overview with little if any practical information.
