Written by the Pennsylvania native, "Backpacking Pennsylvania, 37 Great Hikes" has now established Mitchell's books as the most current and definitive guide series for hiking and backpacking throughout Pennsylvania. In "Backpacking Pennsylvania", Jeff travels beyond the Allegheny Plateaus to provide concise and well-written trail descriptions. Just enough information is provided for each trail system and Mitchell leaves it to the reader to put his book down and to just start hiking!

Jeff Mitchell's Preface in "Backpacking Pennsylvania" is a righteous testamony to those special places which are rapidly disappearing in the 21st Century. I did not know that PA had so many trails that can be day hiked or for weeks on end. This is a good place to start if you want to see if you can handle it before trying to hike th AT all the way.

A definitive, practical text on crystal growing.

I first used this book in 1963 as a tutorial on crystal growing
methods. Not only did it provide step-by-step instructions that
actually worked, but it explained the physics of crystals and the process of crystallization in language that a high school student could easily understand. I used various salts to grow exquisite
crystals of different colors, obtaining most of my materials from local sources and my chemistry teacher. My experiments were performed in a depression under our house ... with a dirt floor. this was my "chemistry laboratory." The evaporation method produced cloudy crystals, so I reverted to the supersaturated technique to produce perfect specimens. My heating mantle consisted of a coffee can with a hole cut in it to insert a light bulb. This worked very well. Over the years I have frequently referred to this book and recommended it to others. I still do so. It is worth its weight in gold.

I purchased my first copy of this when I was a teenager, and I've never seen such a thorough treatment of crystals and crystal growing since. I was happy to find this to replace the one I lost.

About the Author

Phil Hughes MBE is a well-known UK safety professional with over 40 years world-wide experience as Head of Environment, Health and Safety at two large multinationals; Courtaulds and Fisons. Phil started work in health and safety in the Factory Inspectorate at the Derby District UK, in 1969 and moved to Courtaulds in 1974. He joined IOSH in that year and became Chairman of the Midland Branch, then National Treasurer and was President in 1990 – 1991.

Phil has been very active in the NEBOSH Board for over 10 years and served as Chairman from 1995 to 2001. He was also a Professional Member of the American Society of Safety Engineers for many years and has lectured widely throughout the world. Phil received the RoSPA Distinguished Service Award in May 2001 and was a Director and Trustee of RoSPA from 2003 – 2010. He received an MBE in the New Year Honours List 2005 for services to Health and Safety. Phil is a Chartered Fellow of IOSH.

Ed Ferrett is an experienced health and safety consultant who has practised for over 25 years. With a PhD and an Honours Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Nottingham University, Ed spent 30 years in Higher and Further education, retiring as the Head of the Faculty of Technology of Cornwall College in 1993. Since then he has been an independent consultant to several public and private sector organisations including construction businesses, the Regional Health and Safety Adviser for the Government Office (West Midlands), and was Chair of West of Cornwall Primary Care NHS Trust for 6 years until 2006.

Ed was a member of the NEBOSH Board from 1995 until 2010 and Vice Chair from 1999 to 2008. He has delivered many health and safety courses and has been a lecturer on NEBOSH courses for various course providers. He has been an External Examiner for an MSc course and BSc course in Health and Safety at two UK Universities, a Reporting Inspector for Independent Further and Higher Education with the British Accreditation Council and a NEBOSH Ambassador. Ed is a Chartered Engineer and a Chartered Member of IOSH.

All the people, all the time

Hitler started out in PR. He was an army propagandist. When the war was over and he found himself back in civilian life, he joined a small labor party as communications director. He soon ousted the founder and created an incident in Munich that led to a sensational trial. This made him a national politician and celebrity. He devoted two chapters of Mein Kampf to the importance of propaganda. He developed the truck-mounted loudspeaker to publicize speeches and martial music. He was constantly on the radio. He invented quasi-religious ceremonies like the entrance of the flagbearers. The endless repetition of simple and simplistic slogans cemented his party’s control of mindset. He admired the British propaganda machine, claiming it was responsible for victory over Germany in WWI. Under Hitler, Germany became enamored of Madison Avenue, and applied its lessons. Selling Hitler is a master class in brand marketing.

The Nazis controlled all communication. When Hitler made a speech, everyone had to place speakers in the streets so all would hear him. The party bought a film studio and produced newsreels to suit, as well as feature films that reminded viewers of the greatness that was Germany, the traditions and the myths that built a nation. In addition to radio, newspaper, film and public spectacles, Hitler actively spread rumors in whisper campaigns. Like internet “facts” today, Nazi propaganda, repeated constantly, soon became truths. “The idea was not to brainwash, but to show that the great mass of Germans believed” – and so should you. Everyone was to be on message, all the time. It was as high pressure and comprehensive a marketing campaign as was ever implemented.

Symbolism was the default mode of Nazi terminology. Everything was measured for its symbolic possibilities. To the point where roofs had to be pitched because flat roofs were Middle Eastern and therefore Jewish. The word fanatic became the highest term of approval. Absolutely everything was meant to persuade. From architecture to ceremonies, from word choice to myths, from symbols to sounds, everything had to add value to the Nazi brand. Hitler himself rotated the swastika to give it dynamism (moving upwards towards the right). Every public space was an opportunity for a symbolic message, carved in stone, draped in a flag or mounted with a statue.

So when Hitler announced it was Poland that invaded Germany, everyone believed it. There was no other credible source. During the war, the propaganda machine simply attributed German atrocities to the victims, making local Germans the true victims of Polish, British or French horrors. Everyone bought it.

O’Shaughnessy’s book is as thorough and complete as it could possibly be. He examines every aspect of language, custom, dress, myths, media, words, phrases and scapegoats. He acknowledges that Hitler actually invented none of it. All of these tactics have been employed before (and since). But Hitler pulled it all together, and with Goebbels as his tool, implemented ubiquitously.

There is a great deal of space given to Jews as scapegoats, but even Hitler admitted that if there were no Jews, he would have had to invent them. There was actually risk that if he did manage to eliminate all Jews, he would lose mindshare. It was that central to distracting Germans, and he knew it. In an interesting side note, Alexis de Tocqueville warned that idiotic notions of race superiority and social Darwinism would play only too well in Germany. This was the 1850s, when the word Aryan got transferred from the name of a language to the name of a (nonexistent) race. Germans already had a reputation for being suggestible to such myths.

Mr. O'Shaughnessy states his premise in his introduction. Propaganda was the lifeblood pumped from the heart of the National Socialist Workers Party. He then corroborates his position with an exhaustive and admirably documented examination of the strategy and tactics brought to bear in each stage of the Nazi party's existence: birth, coming of age, dominance and death throes.

None of the bogus theories trumpeted by Hitler were original. Everything was borrowed. Attribution was distorted and specious yet all through the early years up to Stalingrad, Hitler and his acolytes were able to convince Germans that what they wanted to believe was what he was giving them. Even after Hitler's suicide, half of the German people believed in him.

Ancient history? Mass rallies, the draw of entertainment, simplicity of language and sloganeering, sky-is-falling rhetoric, press and other media manipulation, rumor and innuendo offered to a part of society that is searching for international respect and vindication, we witness it in our own time. The enemy is at our doorstep. True, the media are more sophisticated, but the elements of propaganda remain the same.

I would read it in the original Chinese

This is a famous book but you'd want to get it in Chinese. The English translation - even though it's by the author himself - comes across as a bit stiff for the 21st century. Unless it gets a modern fresh translation, I'd read it in Chinese.

About the Author
Vera Croghan started teaching Swedish at Aberdeen University straight after her second degree from Lund University, Sweden. After her marriage, she moved to Edinburgh where she gave private lessons and translated and interpreted for the Swedish Consul and businesses. She began teaching at the University of East Anglia when it opened in 1963 and taught there for 30 years.

Professor Ivo Holmqvist has taught Scandinavian literature at the universities of Lund, Odense, Ghent and Auckland.

Normally I love the teach yourself series but after a few frustrating months with this book and I am in Sweden at the moment, speaking the language in Linköping as often as possible. This book was a brick wall, it is this discovery method that seems to be in fashion even though there is no proof that this method works any better than others and others claim that it is not a method to be used for beginners, I feel this to be true, the book asks you questions of a dialogue with very little introductory vocab and then wishes you to discover the meaning through reading the book/ glossary / context etc this is very difficult to do without a starting vocab and basic notion of the grammatical rules of Swedish or other Scandinavian languages, try finding the infinitive form of a verb that has only been shown to you in a present tense without any explanation of verb form changes and why for example. I used pimsleur instead and duolingo and websites to get the basics and memrise for vocab, wish this book was good but it is not , at least to me I do like the japanese and the french books in the series but I know more of those languages so was easier to follow even if difficulty level was higher

Ok for a seasoned language learner

Let me start by saying I am a native English speaker and have studied German and Spanish through the intermediate level, so I consider myself a seasoned language learner.

I used this book and CD as a supplement to an online course I am taking. This isn't a bad book for me in this context. I do think it could be a little tough for someone without some background in a Germanic language or if it were used as the only text. The Discovery Method is a good idea, but they do take it a bit far at times. The glossary is really inadequate, and I find myself using a dictionary more often than not to find words. (I use the Hippocrene Practical Dictionary, which is a pretty solid beginner's reference.) Some exercises ask for answers using constructions that haven't been covered yet, and there are mistakes in the book that I caught which could have been easily avoided with a solid proofread. I hope that future editions clean up some of the sloppy design of the book Overall, not bad for a seasoned learner and the CD is useful for pronunciation, but I am glad I am not a newbie learning Swedish solely from this text.

A tips and techniques book

[[VIDEOID:mo24NX5ZX0SJ2WD]]Beginner's Guide to Creating Manga Art is a more of a tips and techniques book rather than a structured course on drawing manga from start to end. The book covers only characters.

It starts with lessons on features, expressions, anatomy, poses, clothing and character designs. The lessons are brief and are covered under 30 pages. For example, for drawing of heads, the front and sides are taught. But for heads at other angles, while there are illustrated examples with guidelines, there aren't enough in depth explanation to go with it. This section is just an introduction on figure drawing.

The second part of the book features tutorials from various artists on designing characters. There are many useful tips on drawing, what type of materials to use and things to look out for. Many artists are using traditional medium but there are a few tutorials on Photoshop.

The third part is on colouring the characters that were drawn in the previous chapter. The tutorials cover a variety of tools that are used, such as coloured pencils, markers, watercolour and Photoshop. Again, there are good tips on handling the specific mediums.

The last few pages feature a manga art gallery from various artists.

Overall, this book is more on understanding the style of manga art, and the tutorials that show you how to create them.

For beginners, I would also recommend getting dedicated books such as Drawing the Head and Hands and Figure Drawing for All It's Worth. With basic figure drawing skills, stylizing characters for manga will be much easier.

A great book for your manga art library

Beginner's Guide to Creating Manga Art is a great reference art book for the aspirant manga artist and manga aficionado in general. This book is not a how-to-draw manga, but guide full of very useful tips on drawing, inking and coloring high quality manga characters. And the manga art in this book is fantastic, bound to inspire your own manga art.

I'm very impress with the quality of this book. This book comes in a protective transparent vinyl cover, which you have to slide off to get access to the book. It also was printed in landscape, which helps to keep tips and commentaries side-by-side with the artwork shown.

The book is 208 pages long, and is organized into three chapters and a gallery:

Chapter 1: The Basics of Manga is an introduction to the world of manga. It includes a brief history of manga, and very brief guides a about manga styles, drawing faces and expressive eyes, drawing bodies and posing, and drawing clothes on characters.

Chapter 2: Designing Characters is a collection of guides on how to draw and ink a few interesting original manga characters. There are 11 character in total: The Barber, Ayaka the Zombie-Slaying Idol Singer, A Female Warrior, Kleo the Cat Girl, The School Girl, A Manga Duo, The Angel, A Forest Spirit, A Japanese Warrior Boy, A Lychee-Obsessed Girl and A Fantasy Elf. Each guide starts with an introduction and list of tools used. These guides include 5 - 16 figures, showing the art at various stages of development, using graphite pencils, brush pens, mechanical pencils, Copic liners, fountain pens, Paint Tool SAI and Photoshop.

Chapter 3: Coloring Characters builds up on the 11 characters started on the previous chapter presenting a collection of guides on how to color these. Again, each guide starts with a brief introduction and a list of tools used. These detailed guides includine 10 - 27 figures using colored inks, pencil crayons, watercolor paints, chalk pasteles, Copic markers, Faber Castell Pitt watercolor and Photoshop.

The final section is a gallery of manga art. This section consists of 10 pages loaded of manga characters. There are 3 images of manga couples, 1 image of a male manga character, 12 image of female manga characters, and two full page images (one of them a school room scenery).

In all, this book is recommended for aspiring manga artists that already know the basis of drawing manga, but is definitely one book for your manga art library.

Good, but.....

I like this book, but do not love it. I am now looking for another book to buy, for character building. The main focus of this book is coloring. There is only a few pages, at most 30, on how to actually draw the character. A few pages on the front and side view of the head, then one diagram, one for male and one for female, on how the body looks(no extra detail). Then a few pages on what the eyes should look like, on an emotional state. The rest of the book is coloring, and the artists showing how they draw their characters(at which they show you how to color them at the back, which is the coloring part. No extra detail on how to do effects....) They look really sleek and "cool", but very little deep detail.

This is no book for beginners. Very little detail on building character, or even certain ways to color or designing effects. I believe you should have a basic understanding of manga and drawing/coloring, which the coloring is mainly on the computer(or digital). Hope my review helped.

Also, if anyone can give me some suggestions on a book to get for designing/sketching/drawing manga characters, please let me know. (if the characters or tutorial characters look like these, that would be even better!)
