South Africa from a Youth Perspective

When you begin to read popular third world literature, you often read from the perspectives of businessmen, or housewives, or militia. It is not often, however, that you read a third world novel that centers around the youth perspective. Kopano Matlwa in her novel Coconut, delves into the post-apartheid world of South Africa through the eyes of two young girls learning what it means to grow up black in a white world. The novel is divided into two parts, one for each girl's narration and is told through two fonts, italics to identify the past and standard font to narrate the present. Through rich description, vivid word choice, and relatable characters, Matlwa is able to make a novel about a very specific group of people a novel that everyone can take lessons from.

Ofilwe, or Fifi, is a young, pampered girl who grows up in a white suburb with her mother, father, and brother Tshepo. At a young age, Fifi does not understand why she is sometimes treated differently from the other girls. She is one of the few black girls in her school, and they do not always understand her ways. Her best friend, Belinda, even tries to change her speech pattern to match hers. "No Fifi! You have to learn how to speak properly...Do you want to be laughed at again?" (49). Her older brother, Tshepo, works to show her that white people are not their friends. She does not listen to him however, but learns on her own as she grows older. That is truly what her narrative is, a story of her learning that even though she is believed to be an equal of her white classmates, they will never accept her as one of them. Fifi's story is a heartbreaking realization that laws cannot change how people think. The reader watches as she grows older, and slowly begins to realize lose the innocence that she stared with. Boys wouldn't kiss her because her lips were too dark, girls wouldn't talk to her because she didn't fit in with them, and she was afraid to bring her mother to parents night at school because she couldn't speak English. However, Fifi is grateful for everything she has. When she overhears her mother discussing to her sister how her father had cheated on her, she thinks in horror of the life she would have had if her mother had not married her father, even though she did not love him. "Instead of waking up to my cubed fruit, muesli and mixed nuts on a bed of low-fat grandadilla yoghurt, would I begin my day by polishing the red stoep that just out at the front of Koko's two roomed-house?" (13). Fifi's story is the story of many young women in South Africa, who are stuck between two worlds, neither of which will ever fully accept them.

Fikile has a different story from Fifi. Fikile, orphaned as a young child, was raised in a township by her uncle and her grandmother, Gogo. She grew up poor, and learned from a young age that the only way she would get out of her home would be to be white and successful. When she was asked in school was she wanted to be when she grew up, she simply stated "white". Sexually abused by her uncle from a young age, she learned to foster contempt for her world and the hand that was dealt to her. She decided to do whatever it took to get ahead in the world she lives in. She got a job at a fancy restaurant, even though it meant stealing black jeans for her uniform. She invested in green eye contacts, hair extensions, and skin whitener to change her appearance. She often even puts herself over other black people, describing them as inferior to her because she is working her way up in the world. Her story is one of learning who you are and learning who you need to be, and how to make those two things work together.

Coconut is the story of a forgotten South Africa, one that is neither black nor white. A South Africa that is half stuck in the old ways, and half trying to move forward. Fikile and Fifi are the voices of their generation, one looking for a way to fit in, and another looking for a way out. Matlwa beautifully weaves together a narrative that shows this hidden South Africa, and brings the reader into this world. I would highly recommend this book to anyone, as it is a good example of post-apartheid South Africa that the mainstream media left behind.

"Two Types of Coconut"

A "coconut" in South Africa is what's called an "oreo" in the United States: black on the outside and white on the inside. This story is about two different types of coconuts---Ofilwe and Fikile---two young South African girls who are seething with the rage of having no love for their blackness. Kopano Matlwa has written this book in fast-moving parts: the first in Ofilwe's voice, while the second is written in Fikile (aka "Fiks")'s voice. At one point another voice is added---that of Ofilwe's brother, Tshepo---providing a much needed counterpoint and I was disappointed not to hear more from him. When Fikile says "I need to spring-clean my head. There is a real big mess up there but I am too afraid to go in because I do not think I have the strength to handle the task of tidying it all." could she be uttering the emotions behind Matlwa's need to lay these relentless truths on the table? I craved some tenderness or the presence of a wise parent, teacher, or mentor; however, their absence did not make this book less readable. The scattered english spoken by Ofilwe's mother seemed to be both metaphor and symbol for the clash of sensibilities present in post-apartheid South Africa.

Worthwile text on Mastercam

It is very difficult to write a text suitable for tecnical

school and college undergraduate level at the same time.

The authors have accomplished this.

With this text you can begin learning to program in Mastercam

from the first chapter.

The CD included makes familarization work without the expense

of buying the full program.

excellent mastercam book i recommend it

being a former cnc programmer and now instructor i am very impressed with this book. It is easy for novices to learn the proper techniques of mastercam programming. It presents a logical learning pattern using graphics instead of confusing
and lenghty definitions contained in many other texts.I found the exercises to be well designed to illustrate the important
aspects of the software. Machinig exercises contain detailed
process tables to help the student understand the sequence of operations and tooling needed to produce the part. As a bonus
the text comes with a fully functional student version of mastercam V9.0 and accompanying student exercises so students
can practice at home. I like the fact that the authors concentrated on laying a through foundation in 2D CAD and
machining and not creating more comfusion by mixing in more complex topics like 3D CAD and maching principles. I assume
additional in depth texts on mastercam turning and 3D machinig will follow.

Not only respectable, but highly recommended

While a co-worker was spending hundreds of dollars to learn Mastercam at the local college, I learned as much at the same pace at home with this fine book. It should be sub-titled as a tutorial. The book begins assuming you know nothing about CAD or CAM. It carefully explains in a straight-forward method all you need to know. Everything is done in sequence so each excercise teaches new commands to be used. It is a great primer for new users learning Mastercam Mill. I have shared it with experienced users at work as a reference manual for 2-D machining. The book comes with a Students disk containing Mastercam software and exercises, to help you learn. This was a real time-saver for me. I would recommend this book to all beginners and professionals.

About the Author
Howard Schilit, Ph.D., CPA, is the founder and chief executive officer of Schilit Forensics LLC. Dr. Schilit is a pioneer in the field of detecting accounting tricks in corporate financial reports that mislead investors. Howard was the founder and CEO of CFRA, a global forensic accounting research organization. He has been a leading spokesman before the US Congress, the SEC, and global media outlets about the causes and early warning signs of accounting tricks in public filings. Dr. Schilit began his career as an Associate Professor of Accounting at American University and continues to teach and lecture all over the world. Dr. Schilit holds his doctorate in Accounting from the University of Maryland.
Jeremy Perler, CFA, CPA, is the Director of Research at Schilit Forensics and co-author of Financial Shenanigans: How to Detect Accounting Gimmicks & Fraud in Financial Reports (3rd edition, 2010). Great Book, but Important Sections of Second Edition Dropped

I should begin by saying that I completely agree with the previous five star reviews. This is a magnificent book, and the second edition had a great influence on my investing. All serious investors should read this.
I would like to draw attention though, to the changes made since the second edition. The second edition described seven basic shenanigans which, for the most part, manipulated earnings and revenue, as these are the headline numbers that the bulk of investors look at. The third edition covers the same shenanigans, though the sections have been re-written, and the examples have been changed and updated. The third edition adds sections on shenanigans to manipulate cash flow numbers (yes, this can be done) and metrics that investors use frequently. The new sections are worth the upgrade to me, though if you read widely in the area, you won't find much new. Mulford and Comiskey's Creative Cash Flow Reporting, for example, covers the same material as the section on cash flow.
Those who haven't read the second edition should be aware that portions of the second edition have been eliminated. The sections on "Problem Areas" and "Looking Back . . . Looking Forward" are gone, but the topics they deal with have either been absorbed into the rest of the text or can be dropped without great consequence. The section on "Techniques for Detecting Shenanigans" has also been dropped, and I believe that this is unfortunate. While some readers may already be familiar with common-size analysis, for example, many investors don't have formal education in accounting and could use the explanation and examples. It was this chapter of the second edition that promped me to create common-size balance sheets and income statements for all potential investments, and I've found the exercise invaluable, both for detection of possible shenanigans and for general understanding the companies I'm researching.
If you are new to this area of stock analysis, or new to accounting, I would recommend buying both the second and third editions. The second edition should be cheap, as used copies of older editions are not usually in high demand. The third edition gives investors more to look out for, but without a systematic way to apply the techniques, I doubt many will put their new found knowledge to good use.

Essential Tool for any Finance/Accounting Professional

As a financial accountant, I have special appreciation for "Financial Shenanigans" by Schilit and Perler. Like the preface mentions, this book truly provides the "post-mortem analysis" it promises. It clearly narrates the most infamous financial reporting failures in history (US, Europe, & Asia), and the lessons such fraudulent mistakes offer those who wish to learn. Not only does it serve as a quick reference for all possible fraudulent methods to date, but also as a review of core financial accounting principles (US GAAP) and basic performance ratio calculations.

In addition, it is intelligently written, and easy to follow and comprehend. More specifically, it also employs humor in a smart, witty manner. It does a great job of drawing in readers who appreciate reading up-to-date, practical accounting/finance material they can apply to their professions (outside of academia). Best of all, it isn't dry, but engaging!

I expect my copy will become worn and dog-eared within a short period of time, as this book has become my most trusted coworker and best companion at the office. I am looking forward to following these two authors and reading more of their upcoming work.

My personal opinion, of course, but perhaps more MBA's and senior executives ought to read this book and educate themselves! We're on to you, C-suite!

About the Author

Teddy Atlas works as a color analyst on ESPN's Friday Night Fights and was boxing commentator for NBC's coverage of the Olympic games in Sydney (2000) and Athens (2004). He is also founder and chairman of the Dr. Theodore A. Atlas Foundation, named for his father, which has raised and donated more than one million dollars to individuals and organizations in need.

Boxing trainer and ESPN commentator Atlas ruminates on fighting as a form of masculine psychotherapy, from his own youthful street brawling to his stints training a young Mike Tyson and heavyweight champ Michael Moorer. His theme is the male psyche's craving for paternal approval, evinced in his juvenile acting out against an emotionally distant dad and his ringside relationships with a succession of surrogate sons. A Warrior's Handbook

Teddy Atlas wrote the ideal book for men struggling to find the truth about fear, loyalty, friendship, honor, commitment and even forgiveness. Being a "stand-up" guy has never been easy and most have gone the easy route by acting tough, instead of honestly confronting and over coming one's fears. Atlas isn't a preachy lightweight, because every chapter smacks the reader in the head with the powerful truth that we all have our fears and look for the easy way out of difficult situations. His advice comes not from some pinhead with a psychology PhD, but from a life full of terrible irony.

This book should be required reading for every young guy embarking on life's dangerous journey.

One Honest Man

In a sport full of crooks, liars and thugs, Teddy Atlas stands out as a beacon of honesty. Much like his performances on ESPN's fight series, Teddy pulls no punches in his book. You might miss Teddy's weekly TV malaprops in the pages of his life story, but the unvarnished truth never sways off target.

If there was a national boxing commission, Teddy Atlas would be the perfect commissioner ... impartial, brutally honest and incorruptible. For all of his struggles to validate himself in the eyes of his father, Teddy has certainly validated himself in the eyes of boxing fans everywhere. And I'd bet that his father is proud of the man he ultimately became.

Truths about Fathers, Fear, Fighting and Fate

Fight-trainer Teddy Atlas touched on a universal and
culturally timely issue in his book, Atlas: From the
Streets to the Ring: A Son's Struggle to Become a
Man. His father was a loved, admired, and respected
New York City doctor but, nonetheless, emotionally
distant from his family and, in particular, from
Teddy, his oldest son, the one who wanted nothing more
than his father's approval.

To this end, Atlas, who did not grow up on the mean
streets, wound up there in his desperate quest to
wrestle with fear and the lack of his father's (and
his own) approval. Along the way, Atlas chronicles
his violent street fights, his terrifying bus ride to
Riker's Island, his undeserved second and third
chances, and the scar he received in a knife fight,
extending from scalp to jaw. The wound, from which he
almost bled to death, required 200 stitches on the
outside and 200 on the inside. That visible and
invisible scar on his face is the central metaphor for
Atlas's life - it was, in reality, Atlas's heart that
received the 400 stitches that ultimately healed, but
was still scarred inside and out.

After a number of scrapes with the law and a stay on
Riker's Island, Atlas was introduced to boxing's own
pugilistic Socrates, Cus D'Amato. D'Amato, who was
revered as a trainer and motivator of champions
(former heavyweight champion Floyd Patterson, for
example), became a surrogate father to Atlas. But,
like Atlas's own father, D'Amato had his own demons
and flaws and, ultimately, was not the ideal Atlas
wanted him to be. Under D'Amato's guidance, Atlas
relates how he became himself a father-figure,
mentor, and life coach to literally hundreds of kids
from the streets where the world of boxing became the
principal way of learning about oneself by facing
one's fears and pain. Atlas became the "Young
Master." Atlas's greatest charge became the young
Mike Tyson, for whom Cus was willing to compromise his
own strict rules in a race against time to make Tyson
a champion before he (Tyson) self-destructed. Atlas
ultimately pulled a gun on Tyson and threatened to
kill him after learning that Tyson sexually abused
Atlas's eleven year-old sister-in-law.

Atlas subsequently walked away from the future
champion, his surrogate father and chronicles the rest
of his path through the bizarre world of boxing.
Along the way, Atlas continues to train fighters,
including heavyweight champion Michael Moorer and
relates some surreal Goodfella-like encounters with
Sammy "The Bull" Gravano (who turned on mob boss John
Gotti). Gravano was interested in getting a piece of
the action in the boxing game as well as having Atlas
train his son and was fascinated with Atlas's personal
life philosophy as well as his training programs.
Atlas also rubbed up against the arts and Hollywood.
Dancer/choreographer Twyla Tharp asked Atlas to train
her for her Broadway comeback at the age of forty-four
and became another of Atlas's rapt students. Her
stage return in 1983, after being trained in the
physical and psychological realities of boxing, was a
smash hit. She even choreographed a boxing-based
dance piece called "Fait Accompli." Atlas, a true
romantic, threw a pair of boxing gloves onto the stage
amidst the shower of bouquets. And, in 1987, Atlas
became a choreographer of sorts himself, consulting on
the boxing scenes in the movie about concentration
camp boxing, Triumph of the Spirit. He recounts his
professional admiration for and work with actor Willem
Dafoe. Atlas speaks of his marriage to a tough-minded
Albanian immigrant's daughter and his love for his own
family. But Atlas himself is honest enough to realize
that he, too, mirrors his own father's quest to help
others often at the expense of his own family.

In the latter part of the book, Atlas chronicles his
mentoring/training of moody, doubt-plagued fighter
Michael Moorer, culminating in Moorer's winning of the
heavyweight championship over Evander Holyfield. Many
boxing fans remember the night Teddy Atlas stood in
front of Moorer between rounds and implored him "there
comes a time in a man's life when he makes a decision
to just live, to survive - or he wants to win. You're
doing just enough to keep him off ya and hope he
leaves ya alone. You're lyin' to yourself, but you're
gonna cry tomorrow. You're lyin' to yourself!...And
I'd be lyin' if I let you get away with it! Do you
want to cry tomorrow? Huh? Then don't lie to
yourself anymore! There's something wrong with this
guy! Now back him up and fight a full round!" That
scene was vintage Teddy Atlas.
But Moorer and Atlas were to meet another old warrior
who had tasted bitter defeat and come out of the abyss
himself, former heavyweight George Foreman. Foreman,
who had been invincible until Muhammad Ali dropped him
with a right hand in Zaire, Africa in their Rumble in
the Jungle championship fight in 1974, soon after
retired from boxing for ten years before making an
improbable comeback. Atlas recognized in Foreman a
man who faced the abyss, his own personal metaphoric
"death," and gives the reader a great lesson on
psychology as Foreman waits like a ponderous mongoose
until Moorer makes one fatal mistake and Foreman
knocks him out. Eerily, Foreman wore the same trunks
that he had worn when he lost the championship to Ali.

But the primary message throughout this entertaining
278 page narrative is that every human being, like a
fighter, must decide for himself how much truth he can
take--that ultimately to be a man, to be a warrior, to
have character, one must face fear and self-doubt--and
that by not meeting adversity with courage, or by
quitting or by not truly looking into the abyss, one
may escape temporarily, but pay the price with a far
greater living death.

As a loyal friend, as a motivator, and as a boxing
trainer, Atlas is an extraordinary individual, and not
so self-obsessed that he doesn't see his own
flaws--those flaws stemming from his own need for
approval and to help others, eventually understanding
that even though one may have character, one still has
weaknesses too. To this end he realized he was too
vulnerable by investing himself so totally in his
fighters and, ultimately, became a popular television
boxing commentator for NBC's Olympic Games coverage in
2000 and ESPN Friday Night Fights. He also started a
foundation in the name of his father for a variety of
causes, raising more than two million dollars.

The world needs more Teddy Atlases, men who are not
afraid to show their emotions, stand up and show
compassion and toughness for their friends, make
decisions on principle as opposed to the immediacy of
the moment, and to articulate life lessons that all
too often in popular culture are treated like
old-world clichés.

>From the streets of New York to the third-floor
smokers in Brooklyn to the glitz of heavyweight
championship fights in Las Vegas to the unexpected
cultural connections and serendipitous training of
dancers and actors, Atlas brought grit, toughness,
tenderness, and hard-won truths to the many people he
touched - boxing as metaphor for life - and vice
versa.

For all those who are weary and despairing of the
immediate point-and-click dross of clichéd
"authenticity," it's refreshing to read about someone
whose " word is his bond" - and it's as solid as a
straight right-hand to the jaw.

With the explosion of the amount of data available, the need for stronger data analysis tools than Excel has grown. Fortunately one of the best data analysis tools, R, is also free. This book, A Handbook of Statistical Analyses using R, Third Edition, by Torsten Hothorn and Brian Everitt, provides a handy primer for using R to perform standard statistical data analysis.

As suggested by the title, the book is not meant to teach you data analysis. Rather, it is a *handbook* of methods of data analysis using R. After an introductory chapter for those completely unfamiliar with R, each chapter focuses on applying a specific statistical technique to data using R.

Each chapter has a similar structure, and the teaching method uses a data-first approach. The Analysis of Variance chapter, for example, begins with a sample dataset and a short case study to give context. A brief summary of the analysis of variance statistical technique is given, followed by the commands for how to perform analysis of variance in R using the case study data. For each R command, expected outputs are given so that you can verify what you are doing if you are following along on your own computer. A summary of the analysis findings are given (i.e., how to interpret the data), along with final comments. End of chapter exercises are also given so the reader can explore further.

Who's this book for? It's not meant to teach you statistics, so it's best if you are already familiar with statistical data analysis approaches. You don't have to be an expert though--the short theory section for each statistical method covered in the book gives you the main points, and you can learn main concepts by working through the case study and seeing the R commands used in the context of the given case study problem. Note however that there is a lot more to R than is covered in this book, so don't expect this to be a comprehensive book on how to use R.

So, students, analysts, professors, and scientists: if you are looking to add R to your toolkit for analyzing data statistically, then this book will get you there.

Most important statistical techniques in R examples

ISBN 1482204584 (A Handbook of Statistical Analyses using R, 3rd ed.) is an excellent compact reference on R not for beginners in programming or statistics even though it starts with the brief introductions to R and data analysis. They are followed by chapters on inference, variance, regression, density, partitioning, smoothers, longitudinal data, comparisons, meta-analysis, principal component, scaling, and clustering, as in the 2nd ed., and additionally on quantile regression and missing values not in the the 2nd ed..

The text full of useful examples well teaching R to solve problems of explained statistical techniques and involved math described individually in separate chapters. The descriptions are systematic explanations in the tutorial style: introduction of data, R example to purify data, and R example to find the data significance. The book is well printed on good paper, but the relatively flimsy soft covers are prone to creasing. It could be complemented by Introduction to Scientific Programming and Simulation Using R.

Superior to online tutorials, but just as easy

"A Handbook of Statistical Analyses using R", joins a growing list of related books on my shelf, including Data Science for Business: What you need to know about data mining and data-analytic thinking, Doing Data Science: Straight Talk from the Frontline, Applied Predictive Analytics: Principles and Techniques for the Professional Data Analyst and Data Analysis with Open Source Tools. Each of those has unique qualities, but HSAUR, as the authors consistently refer to it, stands out.

To start with, HSAUR is relatively expensive for a paperback, over fifty dollars, suggesting it is intended for the higher-priced academic market. The text implies this, with a more in-depth treatment of its subject matter and a section of exercises at the end of each chapter - an implication the authors confirm in the preface.

One of the best things about this book is its companion 'R' package, on CRAN, called HSAUR3. For those who don't know, many people consider the greatest strength of 'R' to be its open-source community-supplied extensions, called 'packages', typically hosted on the central repository dedicated for this purpose at cran.r-project.org.

It is common enough for authors to supply supplemental material for download, but by providing a CRAN package Hothorn and Everitt have made the process perfectly seamless for 'R' users. With one command I can import the book's data into an 'R' session, then perform all the same analyses whilst reading. This synergistic approach makes for an especially powerful learning experience, much superior to reading alone, and much simpler than downloading separate datasets, extracting, storing and loading them.

If you search for HSAUR3 on the cran.r-project.org site you will readily find their title page. Once there, you can open 22 PDF's, one for each chapter plus one for the entire book. This helps make up for the fact that, as of this writing, there is no "Look Inside" feature at Amazon.com (although I did find quite an extensive preview at books.google.com if you care you search there). Those same PDF's can be opened within 'R' by a single command, and even edited. From there, copying source code is trivial.

For the sake of this review, I'd like to focus on one thing: logistic regression, which is especially useful for categorical prediction. Compared to the other books in my Data Science library, HSAUR is particularly complete. Not only does it provide seven pages of introduction, overview and theory but goes on to provide 22 pages of practical examples. In fact, the authors work through five case studies: blood screening, women's role in society, colonic polyps, driving and back pain, and happiness in China. Each case study is given a slightly different treatment to illustrate various strategies for using logistic regression on different sorts of data. See for yourself: go to CRAN and get the chapter PDF (called a 'vignette') and read all five case studies - all that's missing there is the seven-page introduction and overview.

No other book in my library gives such a thorough treatment of logistic regression, and it's hard to imagine what more could be said outside of a book dedicated to the subject. In this it far surpasses any other treatment I've found online. As an open-source project, 'R' is famous for having ample free self-help resources. A google search for "learning R" returns 375000 hits, a vast trove of resources varying from entire books for free download, to dedicated websites, to videos, to massive open online courses. No one alive could review all those resources, but I can say I've spent a fair amount of time looking for anything that can elaborate on logistic regression, and nothing I've yet found online gives as good an overview as the chapter in HSAUR. It is varied and complete, without being obtuse. I suppose if I knew where to look, I could have found the chapter excerpt hosted on CRAN, so I'm not saying there's nothing out there. But I am saying that HSAUR does a great job of combining a traditional textbook format with the ease and interactivity of online learning. It's great to be able to read in bed at night, then take the book downstairs and try a few examples in the morning.

Overall, it's a joy to use, and it's not hard to see why some instructors would assign it as a textbook. I envy the lucky students in those courses.
