The More I Wander The Less I Find I Know
By The Wingchair Critic
L. Frank Baum's 'The Tin Woodman Of Oz' is one of the more engaging novels in the famous series. When restless boy hero Woot The Wanderer happens upon the Tin Woodman's palace in the yellow Winkie country and learns of the emperor's origin and history, his question concerning the fate of Tin Woodman's one-time Munchkin fiancé, Nimmie Amee, spontaneously hatches a plot to discover her fate.

Joined by the Scarecrow, the three set out on a journey through the amazing and perilous kingdoms of Oz. Uninvited, the three unwisely enter a castle in the purple Gillikin country and are captured by its giant resident, Mrs. Yoop. There they find old friend Polychrome, daughter of the rainbow, already imprisoned and transformed into a canary for the sorceress's amusement.

Yookoohoo sorceress Mrs. Yoop, placid and regal, is one of Baum's more terrifying villains, showing as she does an undiluted sociopathic and amoral indifference to the fates of others, who she physically manipulates to suit her fancies.

Beautiful and poised, Mrs. Yoop, who lives alone in a dead valley, uses her spell-casting talents to provide herself with sustenance; water, pebbles, and bundles of weeds become coffee, 'fish-balls,' and buttered biscuits with a wave of her hand. When Mrs. Yoop tells the journeyers she is unpleased with their present forms and will transform them to her liking in the morning, the unsubtle suggestion that they may be her next meal is clear.

Mrs. Yoop is not only one in a long line of fairytale cannibal giants, but her gigantism and prim, coldly polite manners make clear she is also a figurative as well as a literal devouring mother.

Archetypal motifs abound throughout, their subtexts driving the narrative and creating its sometime disturbing moods and moments. Woot magically degenerates into a green monkey, a form the text makes clear he finds atavistically embarrassing and unpleasant. In a scene fairly brazen for several reasons, agricultural demi-god the Scarecrow sacrifices his body to gain the gorge-spanning services of a straw-eating monster for his companions, only to be imperfectly 'resurrected' on the far side.

The recounting of the Tin Woodman's slow transformation from a healthy Munchkin male into a man of tin underscores the multiple amputations that necessitated the slow replacement of his human limbs with those of metal, allowing Baum free reign to discourse on the nature of identity, though the theme of violence goes undressed.

The book might have been called 'The Tin Woodmen Of Oz,' as by its second half there are two tin men, original Winkie king Nick Chopper and a second, soldier Captain Fyter, who was also once a man and became metal through exactly the same violent process.

Both 'tin twins' have courted Nimmie Amee, and both been plagued by the Wicked Witch of the West in the period before Dorothy's house dropped upon her from the sky.

It's doubtful that readers of the series ever wondered whatever became of Nick Chopper's 'meat' limbs after they were severed from his body, but this volume answers that question.

Together with those of Captain Fyter, the mismatched limbs have been magically glued back together to create errant oddball homunculus Chopfyt, who, perhaps not unreasonably, is aggressive and ill-tempered.

Where does Nick Chopper's humanity and being begin and end? The question comes in for special consideration when, revisiting his place of transformation from human to tin, he discovers his ungroomed human head alive, listless, and able to speak in a blacksmith's cabinet.

Which of these creatures, if any, has a right to Nimmie Amee's hand in marriage? Has Nick, limited to a kind but not a loving heart, a right to invite her to become his bride and the Empress of the Winkies if he can only offer her dutiful companionship?

Baum was unusually sensitive to the details and nuances of his plots, but here unaccountably overlooks a change of gender.

Since Mrs. Yoop's strange Yookoohoo magic cannot be changed or undone by even the most powerful forces in Oz, Ozma, the land's fairy ruler, once a boy herself, comes to the conclusion that the stalwart Woot can only regain his original young man's form if another Ozian creature agrees to take on the form of the green monkey.

Since readers are led to believe that Woot as the green monkey is still a male, Baum trips himself up when a female character is tricked into assuming the monkey's form.

Baum fails to acknowledge that she has not only unhappily regressed into a beast, but now also inhabits a male body.

In an interesting expository section, Oz Royal Historian Baum provides the reader with new facets of Oz's history and its magical rules and regulations.

Once a part of the larger world, Oz, which has always been surrounded by an impassable desert, was enchanted by "the fairy band of Queen Lurline" sometime in the distant past.

From that moment, no one has ever died or grown older in Oz. The young stay young, the old remain old. "Children remain children always, and play and romp to their hearts' content...while babies live in their cradles, are tenderly cared for and never grow up."

Thus Oz is not so very different from Barrie's Never-Never Land (Oz was created roughly four years after Peter Pan debuted on the British stage), especially since children from America--and presumably other parts of Earth--occasionally find their way there.

Dorothy, by the time of 'The Tin Woodman Of Oz' a permanent Oz resident, like Peter Pan, will now never grow older, though she may evolve and mature as a personality. Like Peter Pan, she will never know puberty, sexuality, adulthood, parenthood--or death.

Always more than what they seem, the Oz books entertain, spellbind, and fascinate. 'The Tin Woodman Of Oz,' full of eccentric undertones and undertows, tugs at its readers with its strange siren call and is certain to leave children and adult readers perplexed, questioning, somewhat wiser, and anxiously reaching for the next volume.

One of the Best in the Oz Series
By F. Orion Pozo
Nick Chopper, the famous Tin Woodman of the land of Oz, was once a flesh and blood man. He fell in love with a beautiful Munchkin girl who worked for the wicked witch. The witch tried to break up the couple by enchanting his ax. As his bewitched ax cut off parts of his body, Nick would get the parts replaced with tin prostheses by a tinsmith. He ended up totally tin after his ax split his trunk in half. We all know how he rusted in a sudden rainstorm only to be rescued by Dorothy Gale and an animated Scarecrow, and how the Wizard of Oz granted his wish by giving him a velvet heart.
This book begins years later when a young wanderer named Woot, asks the Tin Man why, after he got his heart from the Wizard of Oz, he never went back to marry that Munchkin lass. The Woodman decides that he owes it to the young woman to go back and fulfill his promise to marry her. So he, the Scarecrow and Woot go off to find the Munchkin woman so he can propose to her. On the way they are captured by a giantess, meet their old friend Polychrome, the Rainbow's daughter, and are transformed into a tin owl, a straw-stuffed bear, and a green monkey. They also run into a second tin man and have a reunion with the Munchkin tinsmith. Who is this second tin man? Will they regain their true forms? Will the Tin Woodman find his sweetheart and marry her? The story is well-developed and fun to read. It is an Oz adventure that all will enjoy.

The Tin Man gets his chance to shine
By Billie Rae Bates
For his 12th book in the Oz series, L. Frank Baum gives the limelight to a character that hasn't had a lot of it in the previous 11: our friend the Tin Woodman, the former Nick Chopper and the current emperor of the Winkies. Indeed, even the Scarecrow, another of the beloved original characters from the first book, has had more airtime in this series, even though he's been largely on the periphery of the storylines.

For the Tin Man's turn, Baum rightly addresses an unresolved issue from Nick's past: Whatever happened to that sweet Munchkin girl he fell in love with as a "meat" man, Nimmie Amee, and shouldn't he do right by her faithfulness to him amid his part-by-part transformation to a tin body, courtesy of the evil enchantment of the since-deceased Wicked Witch of the East? Shouldn't he reward Nimmie by marrying her, making her an empress, even though he doesn't have the same loving heart he used to as a flesh-and-blood man and doesn't really "love"-her-love-her these days?

A new character, a young lad named Woot the Wanderer, becomes so enthralled by the Tin Woodman's back story that he convinces the emperor, along with his best friend Scarecrow, to journey to Munchkin Country and find Nimmie Amee. And so the adventure begins.

Baum gets special praise in this one for explaining how Oz came to be a fairyland, as well as just why the Wicked Witch of the East shriveled up and scattered to dust when she had that fateful meeting with Dorothy's house.

PASS - Go buy Art of Paranorman Instead
By Amazon Customer
If you're an avid book collector you might want to pass on this. All the art in the book is "production art" meaning the art probably was re-quested in the morning and the artist had until the end of the day to have three versions of the idea. To be able to achieve this you have to heavily leverage photo reference and the final result, while informative to the director, isn't very inspiring or beautiful. All art of books have a certain amount of "production art" but some show more models, or story boards, or fully painted out moment pieces. The Art of Civil War doesn't strike a nice balance. Coupled with very darkly printed pages this book is very much a pass! ( Dark artwork that results in dark prints feels like a late assignment being turned in for a college art class)

i'm also happy with all the character design and concept art for ...
By Zane Wong
THis went over my expectation!! i was surprised how many storyboard sequence they got in the book that was almost exactly how it went in the movie!
i'm also happy with all the character design and concept art for the sets. The only reason why i gave it a 4 instead of a 5 is because the lack of Spiderman concept art in this book, perhaps it's becasue the addition of him was late in the production, but if you're looking for some spidey art in this book, i can spoil it for you, there are only 2 and i'ts on the internet already.
I'm also surprised how little there was for the final fight scene with iron man vs winter soilder and cap, there are like 4,5 pages of that only without any storyboards and concept art paintings.
anyway, i'm very happy with this, and the amazon price is pretty sweet too compare with how it's going for in my local store

it's pretty disappointing in that respect
By Mipimips
if you're a collector of the MCU film books by all means get this book to continue completing your collection. i certainly purchased the book for that reason. i even pre-ordered it because i was really excited to see what would be printed for the captain america : civil war film book.

however the book left plenty to be desired. most of the rendered scenes look kinda sloppy, as though the artists had cut out characters (such as cap and the winter soldier) from the second movie and superimposed them on backdrops. it almost resembles one of those kid's books where you can create your own scene on a blank background using stickers the book provides you with. the review by martin described many of the pages as pixelated and they were. either the art for the movie was slapped together haphazardly without a care for professional looking work or the book was. maybe both? i hope not. as this is the last movie book for the captain america movie trilogy, it's pretty disappointing in that respect.

i guess i should say some nice things. as always ryan meinerding's art is stunning. most of the character concept art was really wonderful too. the art depicting the showdown at the airport was pretty fabulous too! unless you wanted more pages of spiderman (like some other reviewers wanted). if that's the case you might end up being disappointed.

overall, buy if you want to collect but lower your expectations haha.

Review

“The Arden3 Hamlet is fascinating, and every Shakespeare scholar will want to possess it. The editors' approach is attuned to the relativism, pluralism, and skepticism of our time, and it is defended with remarkable thoroughness and intelligence....Thompson and Taylor's introductory material is in line with their treatment of the text...they are concerned to introduce the reader to the multitude of diverse critical approaches and to the variety within the developing theatrical tradition. They do this very well, and their discussion of Hamlet on stage and screen and of its offshoots in drama and fiction fills a notable gap...The full and consistently interesting commentary is also enlivened by snippets of information about performances...Thompson and Taylor have made an innovative and stimulating contribution to the Arden3 series.” ―Shakespeare Quarterly

“Hamlet...has been given a rebirth of sorts by editors Ann Thompson and Neil Taylor...puts the final pieces of the "puzzle of Hamlet" into place by publishing...updated versions of both the First Quarto and First Folio editions of the play. This wonderful ternion gives the serious students of Hamlet everything they need to delve deeply into the Dane. The textual annotations are extensive and worth the price of the book alone. None of the material is duplicated from the Hamlet: Arden Third Series, so this is all new commentary from two of the brightest minds in the world of Shakespeare... Delivers the quality you've come to expect from Arden.” ―PlayShakespeare.com

Middle aged and finally able to read Shakespeare
By Gilgamesh
I cannot more highly recommend this particular book, No Fear Shakespeare's Hamlet.

I am approaching 50 years old and my only real experience trying to read Shakespeare was in high school where we were assigned roles in class and made to read, without comprehension, Romeo and Juliet and Julius Cesar. In the interim, I tried watching a few plays and dragged my kids to see the play Taming of the Shrew, which they hated because they couldn't understand the language nor the plot. Rather than becoming a Shakespeare hater, I've always felt inadequate and dumb for this huge hole in my education.

My current inspiration to try Shakespeare again was my desire to try and help my high school aged son become more educated and cultured than I have been.

I tried first with the Folger annotated editions of Shakespeare. They look excellent and define the unfamiliar words, but I still could not make sense of a substantial portion of the dialogue. I guess maybe I'm just dumb, I don't know.

Anyway, I saw good reviews about this No Fear series, and I ordered several. So far I have read the modern English translations of Hamlet, Macbeth, Othello, King Lear, and The Tempest. While I feel a bit like I'm 'cheating', I actually have really enjoyed all the plays and at least now I know the plots and the characters and even some of the more subtle themes. I can't answer the complaints that the translations don't adequately translate Shakespeare's meanings. There are a few side notes that point out double meanings and things like that, though there are not extensive footnotes or sidenotes.

To answer those who rate these books one or two stars, my answer is that they are at least a door into the world of Shakespeare for those of us unable to navigate the originals on our own. And they only take a couple of hours to read. It's not like this is a lifetime commitment or anything. The book only costs five bucks, so why not invest a couple of hours and read it? And, for me, I liked the plays so much that I AM now going to dig out the Folger editions and read the originals, with the No Fear books available in case I get in trouble. These modalities of trying to appreciate Shakespeare are not mutually exclusive.

Well, hopefully that's helpful to someone. I wanted to write this so that people would know that these books are not just for lazy students hoping to avoid reading the originals or somehow 'cheat' in their English classes. I'm not a Shakespeare scholar or teacher and never will be, just an ordinary guy, but for me, these books were the window of opportunity that I had been searching for. Two thumbs up, most definitely.

I felt like having the students use this version was a disadvantage ...
By Andi
I am a high school teacher and this was the first "No Fear" play I've used for my English classes. Before this, I used the Folger editions. To be honest, I felt like having the students use this version was a disadvantage because they were no longer learning how to read Shakespearean language. While this does provide convenient translations--students start relying too heavily on them. In addition, the translations don't always translate every word/line; it's mostly a translation of the general meaning. Thus, again, students are not learning to really decipher the language. The Folger versions, on the other hand, give translations for specific words that students then have to plug in in order to understand the actual Shakespearean language. I'm switching back to Folgers next year. However, I'd still say that this would be fine as a companion piece for students to check their understanding, but I wouldn't use this as the only text.

Excellent critical text with helpful notes
By Holly E. Ordway
I've been teaching Hamlet using this text for about two years (four semesters) to college freshmen/sophomores in a general composition/literature class. The Ignatius edition is the best that I've used (and I've used several); I put it slightly ahead of the Folger edition. (The Folger edition does have the advantage that it includes plot summaries of scenes -- very helpful to beginning Shakespeare readers -- which the Ignatius lacks.)

The essays that are included are solid and insightful. They are particularly helpful in helping readers understand the Christian context of the play. Regardless of whether or not the reader is Christian, it's necessary to understand Christian ideas about sin, repentance, and justice in order to grasp the nuances of the play. When students are encouraged to really think deeply about these topics, they end up making connections between the events of the play and the events of their own lives -- for instance, about the struggle between desire ("I want what I want" -- just like Claudius) and reason ("I want to do what is right -- but how do I figure out what that is?" -- like Hamlet). This edition has been the most useful for me in terms of helping my students to do this kind of deep thinking.

On a practical level, I like the editor's choices about what words to gloss; to any adult reader who has read a lot of Shakespeare and other classic authors, the vocabulary glosses may seem like overkill, but it has been my experience that my 18-22-year-old students need and benefit from them.

It is helpful that the glosses are footnoted rather than end- or side-noted; this makes it easier to find them if you need them, while not being too intrusive if you don't. Visually, it's an attractive edition with plenty of white space -- important for taking marginal notes! - and the full names of characters spelled out.

How often does one say "awesome!" about a textbook?
By Gideon Markman
I'm a professor of strategy, and have been teaching Strategic Management for undergraduates, MBAs, and executives (in and outsides the U.S.) for over 10 years, and never found a text that satisfied my desire to present top-notch material in a synthesized fashion. But I now have found this book--Frank Rothaermel's new Strategic Management text is really a brand-new text that makes a quantum leap forward in presenting cutting edge theory and examples leveraging the unique intersection of theory/concepts, empirical research, and practical application. Strategic management is about superior positioning for competitive advantage, and no other book on the market except Frank's has been able to position itself in this sweet spot. Not to mention the cutting edge examples that today's students can relate to (Facebook, Tesla Motors, Apple, BYD, Tata Group, and so on). Another great differentiator is that Frank wrote not only 12 MiniCases (great to get discussion started) but also 15 full-length cases that are perfectly integrated with the text to teach concepts and frameworks presented therein. The full-length cases also come with financial data already prepared in spreadsheets for ratio analysis, another first in the strategy textbook industry. Clearly, Frank's book is unique on many dimensions and has carved out a valuable, rare, and hard if not impossible to imitate strategic position in the textbook market combined with fully integrated and innovative example and exercises. It is not just a textbook but a new generation strategy teaching product that will make even novices look like rock stars. And students just "love" the content--how often do you find that emotional reaction about college textbooks? What Michael Porter has done for the academic work in strategy, Frank is now doing for strategy textbooks: setting a new standard while providing a superior paradigm to teach strategy. Truly awesome!

It makes you a BETTER teacher!
By Anne W. Fuller
I'm a tenure track professor of strategy with many prior years of industry work experience and I have reviewed many textbooks trying to find a good match for my students at the undergraduate, masters and executive levels. Until this book, I have not been successful in this search.

I knew that I liked Frank Rothaermel's new textbook "Strategic Management" when I had a chance to review an early version of it myself. It has great examples and very crisp yet rigorous strategic concepts throughout the book. The text also has an entire chapter on innovation which I believe is quite important for our students to consider as they graduate and get into today's workforce. The book has a wonderful and unique chapter on three different lenses of viewing or measuring competitive advantage. I personally like the pithy chapter openers which not only relate to the material in each chapter but also have a `case closing thoughts' for each chapter to bring the ideas home for the students. The `strategy highlights' are another of my favorite features. They are excellent ice breakers for class discussions. Students love the examples of Threadless, Starbucks, Nintendo and Pixar and Frank has done a great job of tying the exemplar firm's to the tool and topics in each chapter.

What surprised me however was the degree that my students related to Dr. Rothaermel's textbook. Until using this text I have rarely if ever seen comments like this in the "what did you like about the course?" student evaluations... " The textbook was easy to read and had great current examples that made it easier to understand.", "Not only was the text extremely useful, but it applied to everything we did." , "the textbook was NOT boring, it included up-to-date information about companies that was very interesting". "The textbook actually enhanced the learning experience and helped emphasize the points learned in class with real live companies and how they used the tools to gain a competitive advantage." "It was one of the most interesting textbooks I've had in my college courses". Yes these are actual quotes from my student course evaluations.

Further, my actual course evaluation scores are UP when using this textbook. I've taught 16 sections of this course thus far and my average student evaluation is about 4.6 out of 5.0. However fall 2011 I had the chance to beta test Dr. Rothaermel's book and my student evaluation scores soared up to 4.91! Same course, same professor, different textbook.... You be the judge!

A rare find - a strategy book that works well in the classroom and in the field!
By RLP
Strategic Management by Frank Rothaermel is a rare find - a great strategy book for the classroom, and an equally useful book for the manager/practitioner in the field. I spent over 20 years in the field working in corporations, small to medium sized business, and starting and running my own businesses. Rothaermel's book on strategy finally replaced my worn out copies of Michael Porter's books on strategy as my 'go-to books' that I used as my strategy guides at GE and AT&T in the field.

After completing my PhD in strategy I have used many textbooks at the undergraduate and graduate level. When the McGraw-Hill team shared with me that 'yet another' strategy book was coming out I admit I was skeptical. When I heard Frank Rothaermel was involved I agreed to review it and give it a try. I have had great success using the book the last two semesters in an undergraduate class of over 400 students, and with over 100 graduate students.

There are a number of good strategy books on the market - what gives this book a competitive advantage? In my opinion, and based on my experience using the book, there are several points: 1) It is clearly written, the concepts are logically connected together, and the mini-cases are well chosen for each chapter to illustrate key points. My students actually enjoyed reading the book! 2) Rothaermel does an excellent job integrating Porter's five forces/industry structure framework and the resource based view concepts from Barney - few books give such a balanced treatment of the two views that are fundamental to understanding strategy. 3) Frank includes a quantitative view of how to determine a firm's competitive advantage (see chapter 5 - if you are a follower of M. Porter, you know he is an economist and he insists that measures of competitive advantage must be quantified - Rothaermel does this nicely). All of these points apply to both the Concepts, and the Concepts and Cases versions.

If you need cases to go with the concepts, the Concepts and Cases brings 30 some full length cases of a wide variety to the reader - the cases are up-to-date and there are several for each chapter. I don't use more than one or two of the cases in the undergraduate course but I have them all to draw from (fortunately McGraw-Hill has a very easy way to customize a book and include just what you need). However, for a graduate course I use six to eight cases. There's even a nice guide that helps you select the cases that are a good fit for the topics. Again, I've found I can save my students some money using the custom create feature, and with 30 cases it will be a long time before I worry that the same case has been repeated. Also, for many cases, there are Excel spreadsheets available direct from the case data with firm data so you can drive the quantitative points of the analysis.

In summary, if you are looking for a very versatile and up-to-date book with a host of support materials, I strongly suggest you consider Rothaermel's Strategic Management by McGraw-Hill - this is a strategy book that has a clear competitive advantage over its rivals.

Summer of the Dead (Bell Elkins Novels), by Julia Keller

It's high summer in Acker's Gap, a small town nestled in the beautiful but poverty-stricken West Virginia mountains―but no one's enjoying the rugged natural landscape. Not while a killer stalks the town and its hard-luck inhabitants. County prosecutor Bell Elkins and her closest friend, Sheriff Nick Fogelsong, are stymied by a murderer who seems to come and go like smoke on the mountain. At the same time, Bell must deal with the return from prison of her sister, Shirley―who, like Bell, carries the indelible scars of a savage past.

In the third mystery chronicling the journey of Bell Elkins and her return to her Appalachian hometown, we also meet Lindy Crabtree―a coal miner's daughter with dark secrets of her own, secrets that threaten to explode into even more violence. Acker's Gap is a place of loveliness and brutality, of isolation and fierce attachments―a place where the dead rub shoulders with the living, and demand their due.

Suspenseful Page-Turner Crime Thriller!
By Judith D. Collins
A special thank you to St. Martin's Press and NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

SUMMER OF THE DEAD by Julia Keller, is part of a series as the third installment (Bell Elkins Series #3) and boy oh boy, is Bell is in the middle of all sorts of problems— crime, mystery, and high drama in the old mining town of Acker’s Gap, West Virginia.

As Bell returns to her Appalachian hometown, readers meet bookworm, Lindy Crabtree—a coal miner's daughter with dark secrets of her own—secrets that threaten to explode into even more violence. Her father has more than dementia, a retired miner and as strange as they come, living in the cellar so he can feel as though he is still in a mine (and does not like visitors). All sorts of evil surrounding this household.

In addition Bell’s sister, Shirley is out of prison and is living with Bell. It is difficult to keep tabs on this one, much less control. She feels she owes her sister, after protecting her years ago from an abusive father. Otherwise she may not be where she is now, in her career and life (college, law school, motherhood, public office—none of it could have happened, without Shirley.)

Thirty years have passed since that night, yet even now, when Bell contemplates her sister’s sacrifice, a sacrifice that had consumed so much of Shirley’s life—the prison sentence had been extended again and again by Shirley’s fighting and insubordination and by an escape attempt—Bell is overwhelmed.

However, along with her duties as prosecutor and the gruesome reality of Freddie Arnett’s unsolved murder there is also the fact her daughter would be arriving for a visit (and she is not looking forward to Carla seeing her aunt Shirley in the midst of rebellion, alcohol, cigarettes, and self-pity).

This was my first book by Julia Keller, and looking forward to going back and reading the previous books in the series. The author did an outstanding job of creating a strong connection between sisters and the characters for a positive takeaway, in the midst of this suspenseful and dark page-turner crime thrilling mystery and tragedy—which makes for a satisfying and engaging read, as Bell takes a journey as she deals with her past. (Loved Bell!)

Julia’s acknowledgement included the inspiration for this book, which can be haunting—as SUMMER OF THE DEAD, portrayed the devastating long term effects of these stricken miners. Highly Recommend!

A twisting turning mystery!
By OpenBookSociety dot com
Brought to you by OBS reviewer Jerjen

Bell Elkins is a county prosecutor for Acker’s Gap, West Virginia. She has her hands full with the investigation of an elderly man murdered in his driveway. She cannot understand why anyone would have a reason to kill him. She is also dealing with her sister’s return from prison. Shirley, her sister, has been in prison for thirty years for the murder of her and Bell’s abusive father. When Shirley returns to live with Bell, there is a lot of friction because Shirley is acting wild and disrespectful to Bell. She is living a dangerous life and Bell is both worried about her sister and angry about her sister’s behavior. But Bell also feels guilty that Shirley’s life took the turn that it did because she was protecting Bell from an abusive father. Bell was able to live the life she has and become the person she is through her sister’s ultimate sacrifice.

There are many different characters that we read about. There is Bell, there is Shirley, and there is Sheriff Fogelsong, who is also a friend to Bell. There is also Lindy Crabtree, who lives in the town and loves books and science above all else. And there is Lindy’s father, who is a ex- coalminer who is suffering from dementia. He lives in the basement, living under tables and amongst limbs and rocks and coal that Lindy has put down there for him. He rarely leaves the basement and never leaves the house. Or so Lindy thought.

Bell Elkins is the character that is the most portrayed and developed. It is her story we learn, her emotions we read about and her hopes and fears we feel. We learn about her determination, her frustrations, her guilt and her loyalty. She is definitely someone you would want to be friends with and you would definitely want to have in your corner. The other characters in the book are also well developed and well rounded. The interactions between the characters are very realistic and add so much to the story.

The author is very descriptive in her writing style. So much so that I feel at times it was a little too much. I feel like it made the book a longer read then it needed to be. I found myself sometimes skimming through paragraphs to get back to the action. To me this was a distraction from the plot and the flow of the story. Other readers may find the descriptive writing of most details in the book a positive aspect of the book.

Where I did like the descriptive writing was the details about the people living in a West Virginia coal mining town. It showed the desperation of these people who no longer have the mines for their economic growth. It also shows the pride these people have and how hard working they are. This desperation and pride where displayed throughout the entire book and I thought this was a great addition to the story. Another area where the description was a plus was when the murders were being described. I felt like I was right there watching the activities happening around me and seeing the aftermath of the killings.

There are a few murders taking place throughout the book and the mystery and suspense are carried out from the beginning to the end of the book. There are so many twists and turns thrown in that I found it impossible to determine the killer. I love when I cannot figure out the mystery, when I think I have it all figured out and then I find out I am totally wrong. That to me is a good mystery/suspense read.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a twisting, turning mystery that is full of suspense. This is the third book in the series and it is the first book that I have read. I feel that it was a stand-alone book and I don’t feel that it was a problem not having read the first two. But i do plan on reading the other two at some point.

Love being back in Ackers Gap
By Skip
Usually a series gets a bit stale as it goes along. But this one gets better with each new novel. I raced through this, and the ending was shocking yet satisfying. Once again the rural scenery is richly detailed. And I loved being with these characters again. I really hope there are many more.

The Hungry Woman: The Hungry Woman: A Mexican Medea and Heart of the Earth: A Popul Vuh Story, by Cherrie L. Moraga

In The Hungry Woman, an apocalyptic play written at the end of the millennium, Moraga uses mythology and an intimate realism to describe the embattled position of Chicanos and Chicanas, not only in the United States but in relation to each other. Drawing from the Greek Medea and the myth of La Llorona, she portrays a woman gone mad between her longing for another woman and for the Indian nation which is denied her.

In Heart of the Earth, a feminist revisioning of the Quichí Maya Popul Vuh story, Moraga creates an allegory for contemporary Chicanismo in which the enemy is white, patriarchal, and greedy for hearts, both female and fecund. Through humor and inventive tale twisting, Moraga brings her vatos locos home from the deadly underworld to reveal that the real power of creation is found in the masa Grandma is grinding up in her metate. The script, a collaboration with master puppet maker Ralph Lee, was created for the premiere production of the play at The Public Theater in New York in 1994.

In a Foreword to this edition, Moraga comments on her concerns about nationhood, indigenism, queer sexuality, and gender information.

Schizophrenia as a religious craze
By Dr Jacques COULARDEAU
This is a rewriting and expansion of the myth of Medea in a "post-modern" and "post-colonial" situation in America, where the South has become Aztlan due to a Mexican revolution that pays lip service to the old Aztec gods with Jason having an important position there; where the white society up North has cleansed itself entirely of any ethnic penetration; and where an in-between bumper zone is the survival locale of those who fit pn neither side, like for instance Medea, and whose capital is Phoenix.

Medea has been exiled by Jason with her son Adolfo/Chac-Mool from Aztlan. She tries to go back to the Indian traditions of the Aztecs.

The music is Pre-Columbian. The chorus of four women represents Cihuatateo, four warrior women who have died in childbirth. They embody the four directions and four colors of Aztec tradition: East and red, North and black, West and white, South and blue. They play most parts except Medea, Luna, Chac Mool and Mama Sal. All characters are held by female actresses except Chac-Mool who is the only male on stage.

Medea is living the life of a lesbian with her lover Luna though she protests she is not a lesbian. She is a complicated woman, the mother of a son, only one - though she wanted a daughter to take care of her in old age and to spite her husband Jason already that long ago if not from the very start - and that son is getting of age - thirteen - to answer the call from his father to go back to Aztlan.

The fact that all characters but one are females shows an essential point in Medea's vision. She sees the world as purely feminine and woman as a pure mother, and a mother is only satisfied when she is the mother of a daughter. We are definitely inside Medea's total schizophrenia dressed up as an Aztec myth. The key is given by Cihuatateo East who tells us the creation myth, Aztec style.

" Creation myth. In the place where the spirits live, there was once a woman who cried constantly for food. She had mouths everywhere. In her wrists, elbows, ankles, knees. . . And every mouth was hungry y bien, gritona. Bueno, to comfort la pubre, the spirits flew down and began to make grass and flowers from the dirt brown of her skin. From her greñas, they made forests. From those ojos negros, pools and springs. And from the slopes of her shoulders and senos, they made mountains y valles. At last she will be satisfied, they thought. Pero just like before, her mouths were everywhere, biting and moaning. . . opening and snapping shut. They would never be filled. Sometimes por la noche, when the wind blows, you can hear her crying for food."

The whole world was thus created from a hungry woman who was dismantled by the spirits, each part of her body becoming one element in the landscape and her mouth which was everywhere in her body found itself everywhere in the world.

Note the spirits being hostile to that woman - though you can always say they tried to satisfy her - you may understand these spirits were males, though there is no real indication of the fact and the only goddess mentioned in the play is Coatlicue, the goddess represented by the moon, the full moon. She is the goddess of all mothers who died in childbirth. We find that Medea's lesbian lover, Luna, is only the representation of this goddess.

Medea's problem is that she is a woman only in her motherhood. So she cannot accept her son departing to join his father in Aztlan where Jason is to marry a teenage local Apache girl who is barren. She gives him a territory but he needs his son to have a descent.

Medea cannot refuse that departure but she can help her son on his departing night to have some good sleep. She puts him to sleep forever just not to be reduced to nothing by being deprived of her son and consequently of her motherhood.

The lesbian debate is a false debate since Luna is the goddess Coatlicue and lesbianism makes Luna barren to motherhood, hence dependent on Medea's love.

She accuses Coatlicue of treason then and she starts ranting and raving after her crime about how the male god of war who is the son of her mother Coatlicue and thus her brother beheaded her when she was still a child.

This story is a way to explain her devotion to la Luna, her real goddess, and Medea closes the tale by killing herself in a dream of her own where she is served the poison by Chac-Mool who is dead as we know. And Medea's formula is absolutely frightening when she serves the poison to Chac Mool: "Sleep the innocent sleep of the children."

She dies when giving birth to herself and to do that she had to kill her son who then could kill her in the psychiatric hospital where she had been institutionalized, a metaphor of her total escape from the human world. Hence her son coming as a ghost to deliver the poison to her is the symbolical suicide her own crime is necessarily going to bring to her. She will not be negated in her motherhood but she will be negated in her own life.

This becomes a whole metaphor of Chicana women who are nothing outside motherhood, who are goddesses when dying in childbirth, who have to deny men to remain mothers, hence to turn to lesbianism and eventually kill their own sons to save their schizophrenic vision, because these women are schizophrenic.

If there is any future to Chicano culture, to the resurrection of Aztec culture, it will have to come through a vast slaying of fathers and sons in the name of mothers.

That cleansing can come with sleep and not by shedding blood, but men will have to be transmiuted, but that is a vicious circle because then the sons thus transmuted will put their mothers to sleep the same way. The only solution is the end of humanity. If that is not schizophrenic what is?

And the hungry woman will forever reign in the world. If that is not a Post Genocide Traumatic Stress Syndrome what is?
