About the Author
Bernard Tschumi is Principal of Bernard Tschumi Architects, New York and Paris. He was dean of the Columbia Graduate School of Architecture from 1988 to 2003.

It's a book from and for heterotopia

This book is a compilation of essays regarding several architectural themes under a particularly radical point of view. Tschumi proposes, all through the 20 or so years of intellectual work, a complex architecture based on the heterogeneous nature of human behavior and the events it produces and leads, but also introduces an element of architectural reflection criticizing contemporary concepts -the architecture as skin- and its ephemeral condition, a postmodern zeigeist. I personally think is a manifest upon architectural themes conditioned by the unconscious prejudices carried by architectural scholars formed under the shade of modernism, showing the particular fracture of theory and practice in the field work and calling the things by its names, evidencing the mediatic circumstance of architectural development amidst the revolution of communication and -as an excel teacher- imparting his own good points of view. I think it's a book from and for heterotopia.

The most relevant study on Theory of Architecture in decades

In an amazing collection of essays, Tschumi criticizes both modernism objectivity and post-modern nostalgia. His most important proposition -- that there is no cause and effect relationship between function and space -- is a kick in the teeth of functionalist thinkers. Instead of "form and function", he proposes an architecture based on "space, event and movement", in which the conflit and contradictions between the terms of the equation is its most relevant aspect. "Architecture and disjunction" is a Pandora's Box -- some of the questions it proposes are painful and disturbing (like "what is space?", for instance), but have been overlooked long enough. To paraphrase Morpheus in the movie "The Matrix", "you can take the blue pill, and believe whatever you like, or you can 'read the little red book', stay in Wonderland, and I'll show how deep the rabbit hole goes..."

Pedestrian at best.

Tschumi states more-or-less obvious truths about the failure of modern architecture to create meaningful places. The arguments are clear, if simply stated. - My big regret is that the writer never heeds his own message. Tschumi himself is one of the worst practitioners of the very ideologies he criticizes. [Anyone who has looked at the Columbia building by Tschumi will know how poor, cold, puerile, vacuous and dumb (that's right DUMB) a building it is.] Tschumi has fallen into the trap so common in architecture these days, of believing that writing ("theorizing") is more important than observing and building for a true reality. Pragmatics and real life issues are not his bag. - In the end, Tschumi is just another architectural hypocrite. He sort of knows the real stuff, but is too much of a wanker (ask your British friends if you don't know what a wanker is), to care about real architectural problems enough to solve them. - A few diagrams here, a few poorly assembled details there ... who cares if it falls apart three days after he photographs it. - It's just such a pity this flaky poof is allowed to teach. - If you read it, (and I don;t recommend you waste your time doing so), just ask yourself if the doctor seems to use his own medicine.

A valuable account of how the genetic code was discovered.

This is a valuable historical account of how the genetic code was discovered, written by a person who revels in historical details. What a sadness that the author, Dr. Lily E. Kay passed away in 2000: such a talented writer; too soon, far too young. See the Wikipedia entry about her, especially the wonderful video which gives real insights into how she "reconstructs" history. In that video, she says, "I do not think that any one actor [probably including herself - hmsc] in a historical account has the privileged Archimedean vantage point from which to tell 'the true story.'... [B]e content with an imperfect grasp of events and actors, even of nature."

So, she invites us to read her reconstruction with a bit of reserve. But granting that, and the likelihood of occasional slights, oversights and outright errors, I found the discussion fascinating. My only real objection is that it is too long ("too many notes" as Mozart was famously told). I would love to see a book on the same subject, updated to the present, engagingly written, but only half as long.

The book describes just how the universal genetic code encapsulated in dna, was discovered. The puzzle was to explain how a long sequence of just 4 nucleotides could specify the generation and folding of proteins based on 20 amino acids. The final solution - a (nearly) universal coding in which combinations of 3 nucleotides determine the amino acids - was found in the 1960s, and Dr. Kay discribes the push to this discovery as a frenetic race between many competing interests. I particularly like her description of how some of the discoveries were made -- although some of the details were still left out: in this regard, Craig Venter's book, A Life Decoded: My Genome - My Life is a bit more satisfying because it goes into more of the details that I find interesting -- but perhaps his was a somewhat simpler (!) task.

The start of the book discusses the information theoretical underpinnings that (perhaps) prepared the way for the discovery of the genetic code, but, unless I missed it in my reading, I hoped for but did not find a comparable theorical discussion of the actual code after the complete picture was put in place. I would have liked to see something on the chemical necessity or contingency of the resulting code, and of the role of the occasional code redundancy, use in error correction, more on the concept of a "primitive" doublet code as a precursor to the triplet code, etc. Also, something on the occasional deviations from the "universal" code table (either use of amino acids outside of the standard 20, or occasional use of a different coding scheme).

But in the end, this is an excellent book -- and deserves a well-written, shorter companion that perhaps emphasizes less the personalities involved and gives a somewhat more complete and up to date account. I recommend it to anyone who is curious about how the "central dogma" of biology was discovered.

About the Author
Istvan Novak is an associate and the chief technology consultant of SoftwArt, a small Hungarian IT consulting company. He works as a software architect and community evangelist. In the last 20 years, he participated in more than 50 enterprise software development projects. In 2002, he co-authored the first Hungarian book about .NET development. In 2007, he was awarded with the Microsoft Most Valuable Professional (MVP) title, and in 2011 he became a Microsoft Regional Director. As the main author, he contributed in writing the Visual Studio 2010 and .NET 4 Six-In-One book (Wiley, 2010), and in Beginning Windows 8 Application Development (Wiley, 2012). He is the main author of Beginning Visual Studio LightSwitch Development book (Wiley, 2011). István holds master’s degree from the Technical University of Budapest, Hungary, and also has a doctoral degree in software technology. He lives in Dunakeszi, Hungary, with his wife and two teenage daughters. He is a passionate scuba diver. The material is good.

The material is good. Would be 5 stars if it was proofed better. I came from only having an introductory course in Angular and LOVE the style this book is written in: Small, working examples.
If you need to learn Angular, get this book. Its clear demonstration by example. There is no 'getting lost in the details' S the author stays on track, which keeps me on track. This will be a good reference to keep on hand as well. If you're an MVC, or specifically, a dot.Net MVC developer, you'll probably appreciate Angular and how well its explained here. A few typos aside, I learned Angular.Js with this book.

Excellent book for learning Angular JS. Fully Recommend

This is an excellent book for learning Angular.js provided you are already familiar with Web development and Javascript. I absolutely loved the approach the author used to demonstrate each piece of functionality by providing clear simple working examples at each step. The book is very well organized into chapters introducing new concepts and containing a series of simple examples within each chapter building on each other.

The only negative is that it is clear that English is not the first language of the author. The book littered with grammatical mistakes, poorly constructed sentences and odd choices of words.. I debated taking one star off the review because of this, but ultimately decided not to. The book just does its job too well to get anything less than 5 stars.

I think the author is a natural at explaining technical concepts and he should certainly keep up the good work. However, I suggest that he work with a good editor to help him clean up the english.

Teaches AngularJS using an easy to understand layered approach. Two thumbs up!

Istvan does a great job of building up knowledge of Angular JS in very appropriate stages. He starts with the basics and has you create a primitive diving log application and then has you progressively improving the application while connecting that back to important concepts. It is a well written book and I'd recommend it to anyone trying to learn Angular JS.

About the Author
Dimitrios Pavlou is a Professor in the Department of Mechanical and Structural Engineering and Materials Science at the University of Stavanger in Norway. In 2014 he was elected a full member of the Norwegian Academy of Technological Sciences. He has had twenty years of teaching and research experience in the fields of finite elements, boundary elements, mechanics of solids, and fracture mechanics. Prof. Pavlou has published many research publications and authored/edited five books and conference proceedings. He is a reviewer in more than 18 international journals and has participated as a plenary speaker and session chair in many international conferences. Today he is a Research Group Leader (Faggruppeleder) of the Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science Group

Everything you could ever want to know about the Land of Ooo

Awesome book. Everything you could hope for from the Adventure Time team and Pendleton Ward. Comprehensive on the creative process, other characters that Pendleton has created. Tons of artwork. Literally, nearly 5 pounds of art for your face. Even a quick glance through will provide you with tons of insight into characters and their origins, a deeper reading adds just that much more understanding to the Land of Ooo and all its awesome inhabitants. Definitely, strongly recommend.

Enormous amount of content, most everything you would want to know about Ooo

I am please to find just how physically large the book its. This book contains an enormous amount of pre-production artwork that goes very in depth in the behind-the scenes look at the land of Ooo. I am an animator myself and really appreciate just how far they went to include artwork and information that both someone in the industry and casual Adventure Time fans could enjoy. Only thing I would like to have seen more of is storyboards.

Beautiful. I love this book. As a graphic designer and professional illustrator, I appreciate the artwork, story-telling and white space that compose the design of the publication itself. Beyond the design, the content is great, interesting, and easy to follow. It is a great coffee table book to just pick up a few times a week and read a small section. So fun for creatives, artists, animation enthusiasts, and accountants (my husband is a CPA, bought it for me)!

Don't Read this book Unless You are prepared to Cry...happy tears

This is one of those books that should come with a tissue dispenser coming out the back cover. It is a really well written fast paced book with lots of drama and suspense and the best part is its a true story. I was first intrigued by the book's cover which depicts a young boy looking out his bedroom window. Dianne Burke was a young woman still in her teens when she gave birth to a baby boy out of wedlock and her mother basically shipped her away to have the baby and then give it up for adoption. The mother was very strict and was trying to do what was in Diane's best interest. Diane got to hold the baby and nurture it for a couple of days until it was time to say goodbye. She went on to have two other sons but always had a bit of sadness surrounding her due to the baby she had to give up.
Unbeknownst to her, her son, now named Steve, grew up to be a respected member of society and a father of a couple of sons along with three step children and then he launched a search for his biological mother that wound up taking three years before Diane was found. She was ecstatic and a series of phone calls followed and then a great reunion visit.
It was great reading about the reunion and the aftermath. Their relationship stayed strong despite a couple of hiccups. It was great getting Steve's viewpoint of the events that occurred throughout the book. I would have liked one last section from Steve at the end to wrap things up on his end.
This all took place very recently. Its a really good book to read.

Don't miss One Perfect Day!

Diane Burke’s stories always grab me from the first line and keep me riveted until the last. But in One Perfect Day she takes her writing even deeper by sharing her own life story. From the anguish of giving her son up for adoption to the joyous day four decades later when they were reunited, One Perfect Day will touch you to your core. Written in diary style, we travel Diane’s heartbreaking journey, but we also read her son’s determined quest to find her written side by side. What joy to see the story come full circle.

After all the heartache, this is a story of unquenchable hope. It shows Diane’s unmistakable drive and the courage to never give up—a gift she also gave her son. Whatever your family situation, One Perfect Day will remind you that hope doesn’t fade, faith never gives up, and love never fails. Don’t miss this amazing story.

A story of courage and hope

I read this book in one sitting, could not put it down. While the book is billed as an adoption/reunion story, that's not what it was for me. It's a story of one woman's courage. Every tough choice, every stumble, every fall, she found a way to get back up. She gives reasons why. For her children, with the help of friends, family, and ultimately God. But I think it was something else. I think it was the hope that someday she'd finally have the family she'd always wanted. A family who makes her feel wanted, valued, and loved. In the end, isn't that what we all want? Read it for yourself. I think it has a message we all need to hear.
