Merging real stories with theory, research, and practice, a prominent scholar offers a new approach to teaching and learning for every stakeholder in urban education.

Drawing on his own experience of feeling undervalued and invisible in classrooms as a young man of color and merging his experiences with more than a decade of teaching and researching in urban America, award-winning educator Christopher Emdin offers a new lens on an approach to teaching and learning in urban schools. He begins by taking to task the perception of urban youth of color as unteachable, and he challenges educators to embrace and respect each student’s culture and to reimagine the classroom as a site where roles are reversed and students become the experts in their own learning.

Putting forth his theory of Reality Pedagogy, Emdin provides practical tools to unleash the brilliance and eagerness of youth and educators alike—both of whom have been typecast and stymied by outdated modes of thinking about urban education. With this fresh and engaging new pedagogical vision, Emdin demonstrates the importance of creating a family structure and building communities within the classroom, using culturally relevant strategies like hip-hop music and call-and-response, and connecting the experiences of urban youth to indigenous populations globally. Merging real stories with theory, research, and practice, Emdin demonstrates how by implementing the “Seven C’s” of reality pedagogy in their own classrooms, urban youth of color benefit from truly transformative education.

Lively, accessible, and revelatory, For White Folks Who Teach in the Hood...and the Rest of Y’all Too is the much-needed antidote to traditional top-down pedagogy and promises to radically reframe the landscape of urban education for the better.

Review
“The most important work of pedagogy I’ve read in ten years...Dr. Emdin’s humane, and more importantly, effective practices, filled me with great hope and excitement to keep engaging with the community in which I teach.”
—John Warner, Inside Higher Ed

“For White Folks ultimately teaches the unlearned lesson that a hip-hop people’s critical perspective must matter in order for authentic teaching and learning to take place, but more importantly the book offers a bigger case for colleges to make room for other hip-hop scholars.”
—Dr. Andre Perry, The Hechinger Report

“Dr. Chris Emdin...inspired me to become fearless while teaching for social justice. His commitment to young people showed me that integrity, humility and hope are three of the greatest principles a person can possess.”
—Bryan Mooney, contributor PBS NewsHour’s Education Lounge

“As the cries to recognize the relevance of Black lives in this country grow louder...Emdin’s advice about how to more effectively serve students (people) of color is a reminder that recognizing their humanity is a critical first step.”
—Diverse: Issues in Higher Education

“Emdin’s For White Folks Who Teach in the Hood...and the Rest of Y’all Too is a brilliant, blistering, and bracing call to arms for those who teach and learn in urban America. Pivoting effortlessly from street vernacular to sophisticated theory without losing the common touch—or the lovely language and lucid thought—Emdin reminds us that the children and young people who throng our urban schools are worthy of every attempt to sharpen their minds and prepare them for a satisfying life far beyond the classroom. If you’re looking for the revolutionary meaning, and imaginative transformation, of teaching for the real America, you’re holding it in your hands! Christopher Emdin is Jonathan Kozol with swag!”
—Michael Eric Dyson, author of The Black Presidency: Barack Obama and the Politics of Race in America

“Emdin’s For White Folks is essential reading for all adults who work with black and brown young people...Filled with exceptional intellectual sophistication and necessary wisdom for the future of education.”
—Imani Perry, author of Prophets of the Hood: Politics and Poetics in Hip-Hop

“From hip-hop to high theory, the journey Emdin takes us on is at once critical and compassionate, analytical and actionable. Through rich stories and well-developed frameworks, For White Folks offers a compelling and accessible road map for anyone (not just white folks!) teaching twenty-first-century urban youth. It also confirms Emdin’s reputation as one of the most important education scholars of our generation.”
—Marc Lamont Hill, author of Beats, Rhymes, and Classroom Life: Hip-Hop Pedagogy and the Politics of Identity and Distinguished Professor of Africana Studies at Morehouse College

“A generation ago Ntozake Shange gave us a ‘choreopoem.’ Today, Christopher Emdin offers us a ‘pedagopoem.’ This volume is a powerful dance of teaching and art. It engages both the art and science of what teachers must do to be successful with all students. It is simultaneously lyrical and analytic, scientific and humanistic, a work of the heart and the mind. It belongs in every teacher’s library!”
—Gloria Ladson-Billings, the Kellner Family Distinguished Chair in Urban Education, University of Wisconsin–Madison

Overall fantastic read
By Kindle Customer
I have heard a lot about this book from people both in and out of the teaching profession. As a young, white teacher in a urban setting I felt like this was a good resource to continue to develop.

After finishing, I will agree with the critics that this is a fantastic read that offers tangible and effective strategies that can be implemented to increase student engagement. It is written in a easy prose and is full of honest commentary from a teacher who himself made many of the mistakes he notes need to be addressed to improve our school systems.

At times however some of his examples of ineffective teaching seem hyperbolic but they serve to illustrate long held prejudices and practices against students of color. Overall this is a great starting point for study in Pentecostal or reality pedagogy for professionals who want to make a difference in the field and do right by the kids.

Another must read teaching book
By DJ Bob Ski
Although it reads "for teachers who teach in the hood" I think that the exercises and information shared in the text can be useful for any classroom. Easy read, quick read, but really in depth coverage of the facts. Good notes to stem future reading off of too.

This is a must read for educators who teach children ...
By Christopher Lehmann
This is a must read for educators who teach children of color. Chris Emdin pushes educators to think about what it means to use a reality pedagogy. But the book is far more than just a call to be aware, this is a practical, thoughtful way to change pedagogy so that you don't end up teaching some idealized child in your head, but rather you teach the kids in front of you.

The Dot, by Peter H. Reynolds

With a simple, witty story and free-spirited illustrations, Peter H. Reynolds entices even the stubbornly uncreative among us to make a mark - and follow where it takes us.

Her teacher smiled. "Just make a mark and see where it takes you."

Art class is over, but Vashti is sitting glued to her chair in front of a blank piece of paper. The words of her teacher are a gentle invitation to express herself. But Vashti can’t draw - she’s no artist. To prove her point, Vashti jabs at a blank sheet of paper to make an unremarkable and angry mark. "There!" she says.

That one little dot marks the beginning of Vashti’s journey of surprise and self-discovery. That special moment is the core of Peter H. Reynolds’s delicate fable about the creative spirit in all of us.

Amazon.com Review
A frustrated grade school artist, Vashti sits slumped over her blank piece of paper at the end of art class. "I just CAN'T draw!" she tells her teacher. Her teacher first uses wit, then subtle yet clever encouragement to inspire her student to go beyond her insecurities and become, in the words of a younger boy who "can’t" draw either, "a really great artist."

Peter H. Reynolds crafts a quiet, pleasing story in The Dot--one that will strike a chord with children who have outgrown the self-assurance of kindergarten and begun to doubt their own greatness. His marvelous watercolor, ink, and, yes, tea illustrations are appealing in a Quentin Blakey way, especially as Vashti begins to go wild with her dots. The delightfully open-ended conclusion will have readers of all ages contemplating how they can make their own mark in the world. Highly recommended. (Ages 5 to 9) --Emilie Coulter

From School Library Journal
PreSchool-Grade 4-"Just make a mark and see where it takes you." This sage advice, offered by her intuitive, intelligent teacher, sets our young heroine on a journey of self-expression, artistic experimentation, and success. First pictured as being enveloped by a blue-and-gray miasma of discouragement and dejection, Vashti seems beaten by the blank paper before her. It is her defeatist declaration, "I just CAN'T draw," that evokes her teacher's sensitive suggestion. Once the child takes that very first stab at art, winningly and economically dramatized by Reynolds's fluid pen-and-ink, watercolor, and tea image of Vashti swooping down upon that vacant paper in a burst of red-orange energy, there's no stopping her. Honoring effort and overcoming convention are the themes here. Everything about this little gem, from its unusual trim size to the author's hand-lettered text, from the dot-shaped cocoons of carefully chosen color that embrace each vignette of Vashti to her inventive negative-space masterpiece, speaks to them. Best of all, with her accomplishment comes an invaluable bonus: the ability and the willingness to encourage and embolden others. With art that seems perfectly suited to the mood and the message of the text, Reynolds inspires with a gentle and generous mantra: "Just make a mark."-Kathy Krasniewicz, Perrot Library, Greenwich, CT

From Booklist
K-Gr. 2. Simplicity itself, like the dot in the title, this small book carries a big message. Vashti doesn't like her art class. She can't draw. So when her teacher tells her just to make a mark, Vashti belligerently hands in her paper with a single dot. But what a wise teacher Vashti has. She makes Vashti sign the paper, and then she frames it. Seeing her work on the wall encourages Vashti to do better, and she takes out her watercolors and begins experimenting with all sorts of dots. At a school show, her dots are a hit, and when a little boy tells her he can't draw, she invites him to make his own mark. The squiggle he puts down on paper gets him off and running. The pen-and-ink drawings accented with splotches of colorful circles aren't quite as minimalist as Vashti's work, but they reflect the same spareness and possibility. Art teachers might consider reading this at the beginning of each semester to quell the idea, "I can't draw." Ilene Cooper

Perfect teaching book for students
By tnslp
I bought this in anticipation of "Dot Day" (Sept. 15) to use in speech/language therapy. This is such a sweet book about a young girl (although by the picture I kept calling her a boy!) who doesn't think she can draw. Her art teacher gave her confidence, and she in turn passed that on to another little boy who had said he couldn't draw a straight line with a ruler. This was a perfect teaching book for my students!

Great Start
By Ceit
I took a psychology course in the 80s. There has been significant change between now and then. I had purchased this book on the recommendation of the executive coaching forum and I am glad that I picked it up. The book is meant to be a text in a psychology course, but it's easy to follow and can be read independently from a course. I like the fact that you can access online information, as well as take the self tests at the end of the chapters. With the recommended reading at the end of each chapter it becomes a very valuable resource.

A very good Intro. book
By Kenneth J. Kohutek
After reading the table of contents of one or two introduction to psychology texts, they all begin to look alike. This text, however, offer a couple of differences which makes it stand out. For example, there are chapters on both industrial/organization psychology as well as neuropsychology. There are a number of references to cultural differences which are not found in other texts. The authors use the term "biopsychosocial" which is the best descriptor of psychological knowledge at this time (chap. 12). This edition includes information on the effect of drugs on the brain, explanation of optical illusions, active learning in the classroom, social neuroscience and the development of infants' minds.

There are opportunities for online study as well as multiple-choice questions for review in the back of each chapter. The appendices include information on statistics.

All in all, a comprehensive text and worth consideration for adoption to an introduction to psychology course.

Love the book but no access code.
By Laura norton
I got this book for my psych class and it is in perfect condition like they said. However it lost a star due to the fact that it didn't contain the access code for the online resources. While it wasn't required for my class it would be nice to have them. I also can find no way to buy online access from the company without buying another book which I wont be doing. To summarize great book saved me tons of money but it said it had the code and it does not.
