Hope to Die (Matthew Scudder), by Lawrence Block

The city caught its collective breath when upscale couple Byrne and Susan Hollander were slaughtered in a brutal home invasion. Now, a few days later, the killers themselves have turned up dead behind the locked door of a Brooklyn hellhole -- one apparently slain by his partner in crime who then took his own life.

There's something drawing Matthew Scudder to this case that the cops have quickly and eagerly closed: a nagging suspicion that a third man is involved, a cold, diabolical puppet master who manipulates his two accomplices, then cuts their strings when he's done with them. No one but Scudder even suspects he exists. And his worst fear is that the guy is just getting started ...

From Publishers Weekly
Unlicensed PI Matthew Scudder returns after a three-year absence to investigate the murder of a wealthy couple savagely slain in their Manhattan townhouse. Matt's now 62, and his age shows in this relatively sedate outing. There's less violence than in many cases past, and the urban melancholy that pervaded his earlier tales has dissipated, replaced by a mature reckoning with the unending cycle of life and death. The mystery elements are strong. To the cops, the case is open-and-shut: the perps have been found dead, murder/suicide, in Brooklyn, with loot from the townhouse in their possession. Matt enters the scene when his assistant, TJ, introduces him to the cousin of the dead couple's daughter; the cousin suspects the daughter of having engineered the killings for the inheritance. At loose ends, Matt digs in, quickly rejecting the daughter as a suspect but uncovering evidence pointing to a mastermind behind the murders. Block sounds numerous obligatory notes from Scudder tales past the AA meetings, the tithing of Matt's income, cameo appearances by Matt's love interest, Elaine, and his friend, Irish mobster Mick Ballou and he adds texture with some familial drama involving Matt's sons and ex-wife. His prose is as smooth as aged whiskey, as always, and the story flows across its pages. It lacks the visceral edge and heightened emotion of many previous Scudders, however, and the ending seems patly aimed at a sequel. This is a solid mystery, a fine Block, but less than exceptional. (Nov.)Forecast: All Blocks sell and Scudder's return will do particularly well, especially with the attendant major ad/promo, including a 17-city author tour. Simultaneous Harper Audio and Harper large print edition.

From Library Journal
This is the 15th Matthew Scudder novel in 25 years, and readers of Block's noir series know what to expect. It's all here: a perfect evocation of the sights, sounds, and smells of New York City; trips to AA meetings in church basements; Mick Ballou's bar; and the recurring characters such as Ballou, the streetwise TJ, and Elaine, the civilizing influence. In this latest outing, Matt and Elaine attend a "Mostly Mozart" benefit concert at Lincoln Center. At the same concert are a couple who are later murdered in their Upper West Side apartment. Then, the "murderers" are themselves killed in Brooklyn. Without anyone really asking him to, and for want of something better to do, Scudder starts to pick at this case until the whole story unravels before him to a startling conclusion. Every so often, the real murderer narrates a chapter, which adds a cat-and-mouse element. But those looking for fast action will not find it here the pace is leisurely, and characters and set pieces are almost as important as plot. Recommended, especially for public libraries, where readers will ask for it.
- Fred Gervat, Concordia Coll. Lib., Bronxville, NY
Copyright 2001 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist
Bryne and Susan Hollander are living the good life. He's a lawyer, and she's a writer; their $3 million Manhattan brownstone is within walking distance of Lincoln Center, where on this particular night, they attend a charity concert. When the concert ends, they walk home. That's when the good life ends: after interrupting a burglary in progress, Bryne and Susan are murdered. Within days, the police find the burglars, both dead, an apparent murder-suicide. Case officially closed. Unofficially, Matt Scudder takes an interest when the Hollanders' daughter hires him to explore the possibility of a third person's involvement. The clues are subtle--mostly circumstantial--but Scudder follows instincts honed over nearly 40 years of police and investigative work. Block, who writes best-sellers and racks up awards in equal measure, adheres to most of crime fiction's formulas, but he still manages to bring a rare depth and power to the genre. Scudder first appeared as a drunken ex-cop wallowing in self-pity, but he has evolved into a sober, often somber, self-aware observer of modern life. Readers of the series know that the hero's journey has been arduous and often painful. The crimes in the Scudder novels are vehicles to take us to the darkest corners of human experience. With Matt as our guide, we emerge from these visits to the dark side a little more fearful but always richer for the experience. Wes Lukowsky

AN EXCELLENT FINALE!!!!!
By Greggorio!
This is the 22nd Alex Cross novel by James Patterson and I must say it is an absolute joy to read. The first part of the story forms a well-written rehash of the traumatic but gripping events from book one that transpired concerning the Cross Family as well as simultaneously revealing new information concerning the killer/s. The reader will find that every new drop adds tension and depth to the story. As is by now almost trademarked by Mr Patterson, every chapter ends with a clever hook which makes it virtually impossible to stop reading. But why would you anyway? Just about half of the world's population are Alex Cross fans and of course they want to find out what has happened to the fictional family the world have grown to love like no other.

So read on, and learn the truth. None of the book is pretty. The victims are horrifically maimed and abused and the serial killer is leading our hero a merry little psychological dance as he leads him toward madness, depravity and a search for vengeance. The world knows Alex Cross much better than the bad guy does so we know without turning a single page that the forces of good will overcome this particular personification of evil. But the "fun" is in the reading, just like every worthwhile book you pick up. And HOPE TO DIE is no different from that perspective. From an entertainment factor, however, it stands head and shoulders above most of its specific genre. And, dare I say it, head and shoulders with the best of the Alex Cross novels themselves.

This time around, there seems to be more depth to the characters, and a higher quality of the writing virtually ensures that the reader feels closer and sympathises greatly with Alex Cross himself, as well as the other incidental victims of the lunatic running amok the pages of books and the screens of kindles scattered around the world. Even minor characters in the book play a not insignificant role in identifying and catching the killer. And of course the book is so well written that you can't help finding yourself emotionally attached to them, as well.

Finally, and this is just a minor gripe, aimed a the publishers more so than Mr Patterson. After reading such an epic, gut wrenching and emotional story, it is nice to turn the page (or refresh your kindle screen) and be met with the words, "THE END". Or even just another blank page (screen). This time around, I was met immediately with the chance to read the next forthcoming big release. Now, don't get me wrong. I am sure the next book will be an awesome, amazing read, too, but out of respect for the reading experience that we just finished, I believe it would be good to leave some space for the events just passed to sink into the consciousness of the reader.

Anyway, back to the story itself. It is shocking, revolting, and violent but an amazingly satisfying and hugely emotional ride through what seems at the book's beginning, to be an eternal valley of darkness. But like all true believers in the powers of good, keep reading, keep the faith and you will find salvation in the light. Just like Alex Cross does (or does he?). And as I have come to believe, just like James Patterson.

Good work, Sir. I can't wait to read more of your books.

(*eyes his kindle with a huge surge of emotion*)

worth the wait.
By Yvonne
I didn't want to read this one I was so shocked at how JP ended the first one then to find out I had to wait almost a year before I could find out what happened. I wasn't impressed but, I bought the book devoured it and loved it. It was never ending from start to finish. The drama intrigue and fear was amazing. Going through the emotions with Alex was so gripping. You could almost feel his pain. I truly loved every bit of this book except the agonizing wait. That wasn't very nice. But I'm still a huge JP fan and ill never get enough of Alex Cross.

hope to die
By Rob
A really good book and very hard to put down. Well written and full of action. The fast moving pace keeps you enthralled. Although it is fiction, the reader "feels" the story and lives it throughout. Great yarn.

Frontier Justice: The Global Refugee Crisis and What To Do About It, by Andy Lamey

Frontier Justice is a gripping, eye-opening exploration of the world-wide refugee crisis. Combining reporting, history and political philosophy, Andy Lamey sets out to explain the story behind the radical increase in the global number of asylum-seekers, and the effects of North America and Europe’s increasing unwillingness to admit them.

He follows the extraordinary efforts of a set of Yale law students who sued the U.S. government on behalf of a group of refugees imprisoned at Guantánamo Bay; he recounts one refugee family's harrowing journey from Saddam Hussein's Iraq to contemporary Australia via the world's most dangerous ocean crossing; and he explores the fascinating case of Ahmed Ressam, the so-called Millennium bomber who filed a refugee claim in Canada before attempting to blow up the Los Angeles airport. Lamey casts new light on a host of broader subjects, from the reasons why terrorists who pose as refugees have an overwhelming failure rate to the hidden benefits of multiculturalism.

Throughout Lamey's account, he focuses on the rights of people in search of asylum, and how those rights are routinely violated. But Frontier Justice does not merely point out problems. This book offers a bold case for an original solution to the international asylum crisis, one which draws upon Canada's unique approach to asylum-seekers. At the centre of the book is a new blueprint for how the rights of refugees might be enforced, and a vision of human rights that is ultimately optimistic and deeply affirmative.

In exploring one of the most pressing questions of our age, Lamey provides an absorbing and unsettling look at a world in which, as he notes, there are many rights for citizens, few for human beings.

Review
“Andy Lamey tackles this timely and critical debate with an intellect and a passion that are formidable. Frontier Justice could, quiet possibly, have a lasting effect on policy in Canada and elsewhere.”
—The Globe and Mail

"Compulsively readable, at times heartbreaking and super-smart."
—Jeet Heer, literary journalist

"A book that pulses with intellectual curiosity and energy . . . a calm, lucid voice in a a debate often sidetracked by terrorist panic and hypocrisy about human rights."
—The Chronicle Herald (Halifax)

"Despite its grounding in political theory and legal history, this is not a political-science textbook. Lamey introduces the reader to real refugees, offering portraits, for example, of Haitians detained at Guantanamo Bay before and during the Clinton administration. There are even sections where the book becomes a page-turner."
—The Ottawa Citizen

"Frontier Justice provides what the debate over asylum and refugee claims so desperately needs: fresh thinking and historical perspective. Here is a wonderful writer tackling a subject, and a debate, as big as his talent."
—Paul Wells, Maclean's columnist

In March of 1933, German politicians voted to grant their new chancellor, Adolf Hitler, the power to govern with impunity. Members of the Nazi party physically attacked parliamentarians before the vote to influence its outcome, but this terror campaign, it soon turned out, was nothing next to what would follow. It was suddenly normal for critics of the government to be beaten in the street. The most outspoken anti-Nazi activists became the first victims of the newly established concentration camp system, at the same time as anti-Semitic decrees expelled Jews from the civil service and other positions. In response to the wave of persecution, thousands of people began to flee the country. Among them were a young Jewish woman and her mother, who, shortly after the initial anti-Jewish laws were passed, left their home in Berlin for the last time.

The frightened women made their way south to the Erzgebirge mountain range, which marked Germany’s frontier with Czechoslovakia. Neither one had a passport or visa. They were familiar, however, with a German exile group in Prague, which had set up a network of safe houses for escaping Jews and leftists. Armed with this knowledge, the two Berliners went to the mountain town of Carlsbad, where they sought out a kindhearted family who could provide them with a simple yet invaluable means of avoiding the border patrol: the house they lived in had its front door in Germany and its back door in Czechoslovakia. The two fugitives were taken in by their benefactors while it was light out, offered dinner, and released into the night. When their feet touched Czech soil, two things happened. They became refugees. And they set in motion a major episode in the history of human rights.

The escaping Jews were Hannah Arendt, then twenty-six, and her mother, Martha Beerwald. Why was their flight from fascism so remarkable? The answer has to do with Hannah Arendt’s later transformation into one of the great political thinkers of the twentieth century. Arendt’s philosophy was influenced by her experience as a refugee. So perhaps the best place to start in understanding Hannah Arendt, and seeing what we can learn from her about human rights, is by retracing the steps of her journey. As we will see, it is a journey that has much in common with that of refugees even today.

Arendt did not stay long in Czechoslovakia. After sending her mother to the relative safety of East Prussia (from where she would again flee the Nazis five years later), Arendt continued on to Switzerland and then to France, where she was reunited with her husband. Günther Stern, a communist and friend of the famous playwright Bertolt Brecht, had fled Germany several months in advance of his wife and mother-in-law. He was prompted to do so after Brecht had an address book confiscated by the Gestapo, which Stern feared would shortly result in the arrest of everyone whose name it contained. Now, in Paris, he and his wife were part of a wave of twenty-five thousand German refugees, 85 percent of them Jewish, who had poured into France, a greater number than that received by any other country.

Arendt’s exile in Paris was not a happy time. Even before they became refugees, she and her husband had many differences. When it came to politics, for example, she never shared his commitment to communism. (Before the Nazis came to power, in fact, she was barely interest in politics at all, and always dated her political awakening to the rise of Hitler.) Now Arendt and her husband had little to unite them save the hardscrabble urgencies of refugee existence. When Stern left Paris for New York in 1936, his marriage to Arendt had long been over in all but name. Things were hardly better for Arendt on a political level. The arrival of the German refugees, even though they represented a minuscule portion of France’s population, was regarded in France as a major crisis. To be sure, there were people who spoke out on the refugees’ behalf. They included not only French Jews but Socialists, liberals, left-wing Catholics and a few stray conservatives. But throughout the 1930s, these partisans of “hospitality,” to use the term they most frequently invoked, had to engage in a fierce political battle with conservative and centre-left politicians, rank-and-file union members (union leaders tended to be pro-refugee) and business groups, all of whom filled the air with cries of “France for the French!” and denounced the Jews as economic parasites and “undesirables.”

France’s refugee crisis came to a head at the end of the decade. By this point Arendt’s personal situation had improved somewhat: she was employed by a French Jewish charity and had managed to have her mother join her from Prussia. There was even a new man in her life, another German (albeit non-Jewish) refugee named Heinrich Blücher. But after Hitler’s annexation of Austria in 1938, which sent another wave of desperate Jews into France, the political situation of every refugee in Paris deteriorated. France introduced repressive laws making admission much more difficult. Jews who were already present were barred from holding certain jobs or were sent back to Germany. Others were turned away at the border. A mood of despair spread through the Jewish community, and many refugees chose suicide. After a Polish Jew living in Paris shot a German embassy official, the Nazis responded with Kristallnacht—the night of broken glass— burning and looting Jewish homes, shops and synagogues across Germany. Anti-refugee voices in France were already alleging a Jewish conspiracy to drag France into a needless war with Germany; Kristallnacht, perversely, was taken as evidence for this view and resulted in calls for harsh reprisals against refugees. Paris’s Jews lived in terror of what would happen next.

The answer came in the fall of 1939. Hostilities between France and Germany had now formally begun (albeit in the form of the phony war, before the bombs began to fall), and France ordered that all German men with suspicious political backgrounds be interned. It didn’t matter that Heinrich Blücher and thousands of others had fled Germany precisely because they were Communists, and so would be the last people on earth to engage in pro-Nazi activities. Blücher was sent to a labour camp in a small French village, sleeping with two dozen other men in a barn that left them exposed to the constant cold rain, where he soon became ill.

Through desperate lobbying, Arendt managed to secure Blücher’s release (a friend of hers tracked down the widow of a police prefect who agreed to serve as his guarantor). When Blücher returned to Paris he and Arendt married. But instead of a honeymoon, they had to contend with a new internment order—one that now included most German women. Four months after their wedding, Arendt and her husband reported to separate sports stadiums in Paris. Arendt was made to sleep on the stone bleachers of the Winter Velodrome alongside other Jewish women branded “enemy aliens.” Every time a plane passed overhead they feared it was a German bomber come to end their lives. Finally, after a week, Arendt and the other female refugees were taken to a camp near Gurs, a town in southwest France. Constant rains had turned the camp into a muddy swamp. Although inmates were not forced to work, the residents kept themselves busy emptying the latrines and engaging in other chores to stave off depression.

During her internment, with the war situation growing worse, and not knowing whether she would ever see her husband again, Arendt was overcome with thoughts of killing herself. It was something many other camp residents considered. At one point, there was talk among the refugees of committing suicide en masse, as a form of protest against the way they had been treated by the French government. But the inmates soon decided that this would only please their captors. As Arendt later wrote, “When some of us suggested that we had been shipped there pour crever [to be snuffed out] in any case, the general mood turned suddenly into a violent courage of life.”

Several weeks after Arendt’s arrival in Gurs, German troops invaded Paris. All communications broke down and the camp descended into chaos. Many women decided to stay, afraid to leave the one place their husbands would at least know to look for them. When Gurs later came under the jurisdiction of the collaborationist Vichy government, most of these inmates were handed over to the Nazis for extermination. Arendt was lucky: she had somewhere she could go. The same Paris friend who had secured Heinrich Blücher’s release, a wealthy German exile, was renting a house near the southern French town of Montauban. Arendt could reach it by travelling on foot and hitchhiking. Montauban was in total confusion when Arendt arrived. Many homes had been left empty in the panic of war, and the mayor had chosen to express his opposition to the new Vichy government in northern France by turning empty buildings over to former internees. As a result, thousands of refugees were streaming into Montauban from all across France. They slept on empty floors, dragging in every mattress they could find, creating conditions almost as crowded and cramped as in the camps they had just escaped.

It was against this backdrop that Hannah Arendt had one of the happiest experiences of her life. One day she found herself on the main avenue of Montauban. There, amid piles of mattresses, furniture and garbage, she saw her husband walking down the street. Blücher’s camp had been evacuated when the Nazis took Paris, and he had joined the great migration of people—travelling on bicycles, in the backs of trucks, on foot with everything they could carry—streaming into unoccupied southern France. Surrounded by crowds of refugees scavenging for scraps of food and tobacco, others seeking word of missing lo...

Andy Lamey's "Frontier Justice" is a heart-breaking book. While I don't know anyone who would say that life for refugees would be easy, refugee life seems to be a particular sort of horrific, something that Lamey paints for readers without being lurid. Lamey does a brilliant job illustrating the humanitarian problems that arise because of how refugees are treated by governments and by regular citizens around the world.

This is a well-written, well-thought out, very thorough book. Lamey does a fantastic job of laying out evidence so that he isn't only appealing to people's hearts when talking about what can be such a charged issue. He lays everything out in a logical, smart way that really appeals to a reader's higher intellect. At the same time, his writing style is very smart and compelling; it isn't too often that I have had a non-fiction book that was also non-memoir that I had a lot of trouble putting down.

This comic is fun!
By Kid Kyoto
OK... just to give some background, Battle of the Planets was a 1970's translation/adaptation of a Japanese cartoon called Science Ninja Team Gatchaman. It took out a lot of the violence, whitewashed the Japanese names with American ones and added a cute robot.

This book is called Battle of the Planets and uses the American names but is much closer to the original Japanese Gatchaman than the American adaptation.

Under the art direction (and gorgeous covers) of Gatchaman fan Alex Ross and published by Top Cow studios, this book updates the original series adding more back-story and details while keeping the campy styles and 70s designs fans fondly remember. This is a black and white reproduction (there were also full-sized, full color reprints) but seems to have been shot from the inked pages, they do not have the muddy B&W that marred some of Top Cow's other B&W books.

There are some odd choices; it reprints issues 1-9 and a special focusing on one character. But the special is placed right in the middle of a storyline and interrupts the flow and continuity. Putting it at the end would have made the book much more coherent.

But you get lots of science ninja action and it gave me warm fuzzy memories of the original show. So if you like Battle of the Planets/gatchaman/G-Force/Eagle Riders etc you'll like this take on them.

great read

This is a really good read, my only complaint is when a black background was used in some of the word balloons. It really made it hard to read without a flashlight, but still if you love g-force/gatchaman/battle of the planets, buy this book

The Fortune at the Bottom of the Pyramid: Eradicating Poverty Through Profits, by C.K. Prahalad

The last couple of decades have seen great increases in sales, now multinational corporations are seeing markets with sluggish or no growth. One market that's been overlooked is also the fastest growing market in the world, and it's where you least expect it: at the bottom of the pyramid. Collectively, the world's 5 billion poor have vast untapped buying power. They represent enormous potential for companies who learn how to serve this market by providing the poor with what they need. This creates a win-win situation: not only do corporations tap into a vibrant market, but by treating the poor as consumers they are no longer treated with indignity; they become empowered customers. Corporations who service this market form an economic infrastructure, which creates real jobs for the poor, and finally an end to the vicious cycle of poverty. This book is a 3-part manifesto: passionate argument; detailed case studies from India, Peru, Mexico, Brazil, and Venezuela, and range from salt to soap, banking to cellphones, health to housing; and lastly, a CD with digital videos shot on location, designed to bring these innovations alive.C K Prahalad shows why we can't afford to ignore "Bottom of the Pyramid"(BOP) markets.

A new paradigm for poverty relief
By John Gibbs
If we stop thinking of the poor as victims or as a burden and start recognizing them as resilient and creative entrepreneurs and value-conscious consumers, a whole new world of opportunity will open up, according to C K Prahalad in this book. Rather than being a drain on the rich world's resources, the poor can be a source of innovations and the engine of the next round of global trade and prosperity.

For more than 50 years a broad range of government and non-government organizations have been fighting poverty, but they have not succeeded in eradicating it. According to the author, we need a new approach which involves partnering with the poor to create large-scale profitable entrepreneurship in which the poor are actively engaged. There is a significant opportunity for value-creation latent in the bottom-of-the-pyramid market.

The book goes on to describe a number of companies which are successfully enriching the lives of the poor while operating profitably. Aravind Eye Care System, which provides cataract surgery, operates profitably and is the largest eye care facility in the world, yet 60% of the patients are treated for free. ITC placed computers in villages, allowing farmers to check prices, make better decisions, and improve their income. Many other large-scale success stories are told.

In my view the book proposes a very helpful approach to fighting poverty, devoid of the usual paternalistic assumptions. On the whole the poor are not looking for our charity; they are looking for opportunities to use their skills and labour to improve their circumstances. However the title of the book seems to overstate the "fortune" that is to be made. The examples given by the author were viable businesses, but they were focused on serving their customers, not on making a fortune. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in serving the poor.

Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence, and anecdotal evidence is not proof
By Emc2
Last year this book became a best seller hit among the developmental community at Washington, D.C., to the point that all bookstores at Metro DC run out of it. With notorious and well publicized praising comments from Madeleine Albright, Bill Gates and the like, I bought it too, but just to discover all the frenzy was undeserved from the viewpoint of poverty eradication.

Undoubtedly Mr. Pralhad's research demonstrates there are plenty of opportunities to do good business among the poor at the BOP (bottom of the pyramid), for them to benefit from the products and services not available now, and for some of them to go out of poverty by becoming entrepreneurs (market penetration is always limited). I agree on these conclusions, as commented extensively by the previous reviewers, and without a doubt this book will become a reference in many Business Schools. But to assert that this strategy will eradicate poverty and bring development is plain sophistry. As Carl Sagan said "Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence".

Why sophistry? Regarding the poverty eradication claimed by Mr. Prahalad I will try to highlight some of the main flaws in his rationale and lack of sufficient evidence:

1. Despite the consideration of several cases from around the Third-World, most of the discussion and arguments to build the framework are related to India, excessively. The conditions of the poor in Latin America are quite different, and often, they have better public services available to them. On the other hand, many African countries have worst conditions. So you can not reach valid conclusions based solely on a country with such unique cultural and ethnical conditions. For doing business the cases are fine, especially for India or China because they are such huge markets at the BOP.

2. Wealth creation is hugely overestimated. Poor entrepreneurs and their immediate family will undoubtedly benefit from these new economic activities, but the framework lacks an explanation about how these oases of welcomed capitalism will trickle-down to the rest of their neighbors and poor villages. The implicit assumption is that everybody at the BOP has to become an entrepreneur for this strategy to work, because by just having access to affordable consumer products it seems very unlikely that poverty will be eradicated. The proposed framework is just good for doing business and for the poor to have access to new services and products, but where is the sustainable "fishing industry" for the rest of the poor population? The cases are very unique, islands of excellence, and with limited potential for a population the huge size of the BOT to bail out of poverty in significant numbers.

3. The analysis lacks the historical, cultural, legal and socio-economical background for a given country or region, and this consideration is fundamental for a proper analysis on sustainable development. Even when Mr. Pralhalad correctly identifies lack of education, corruption and the size of the informal sector as barriers for development and doing business, he then oversimplifies a lot on how to overcome these key issues, and again, an isolated Indian case is used as the magic formula to solve the problem through information technology. In fact, at the end of Chapter 6, within the conclusions, he recognizes that the illustrations he provides "are but islands of excellence in a sea of deprivation and helplessness". As the development community knows well, these successful stories are very hard to replicate. In Latin America we have the outstanding cases of Chile, Uruguay and Costa Rica. In Brazil, we have the cases of the Southern states of Santa Catarina, Paraná, São Paulo and Rio Grande do Sul. All of them very developed as compared to their neighbors (in terms of income, education, health, etc.), but despite all efforts, no one has successfully reproduced these islands of excellence at a scale that makes a difference.

4. An example will help to understand how superficial the cases are from a point of view of development and poverty eradication. The Brazilian case of "Casas Bahia" lacks the consideration of the socio-economic environment of the country, especially the case omits to mention key characteristics of the financial and credit markets (for those interested in this particular case from the point of view of business, I recommend you read "Samuel Klein e Casas Bahia: Uma trajetoria de Sucesso", Novo Seculo, 2005, this is a real and really impressive business success story). Mr. Klein successfully, by trusting the poor, built an empire that today is still one of the few option many mid- and low-income families have to buy the first computer for their children going to college in Brazil. But, let's see why the market share for credit cards is only 4%, and why it is not a real threat for Casas Bahia own financial system as stated in the book, as well as why there is not much in here to help eradicat poverty in Brazil. Annual inflation today in Brazil is in the order of 3-4%, and the Brazilian currency, the "Real" have been steadily revaluating against the dollar for the last 3 years. However, interest rates in Brazil are sky-high, a legacy of the hyper-inflation times of twenty years ago. Interest rates for well-known international credit cards are 9-11% per month, which compounded translates to an annual rate close to 180%, regardless of whether you're poor or rich. Today retail chain stores of this type charge around 3% per month, embedded in the price of the consumer products, so the consumer doesn't know up-front the real price. This translates to a compounded rate of 43% per year. Often if you try to pay upfront, there is no discount. So where is the real benefit for the poor? Or are they just getting every day more indebted, and spending money on fat interests that they could have used to buy more or better food or better health services for their kids. I do not see where poverty eradication fits in this case. Obviously Brazil has a problem of lack of real competition in the capitalist sense; even the branches of American Banks doing business in Brazil charge these exorbitant rates. As a reference for the readers, you can buy a 30Gb iPod in Brazil for the "reasonable" amount of US$1,000, payable in 12 installments, and for the high price we also have to thank the federal government high taxes on almost everything. Coming back to the case, as an additional "benefit", you only can make the payments in person at stores of the retail chain, just to make sure the poor are tempted every month and come back for more when they are close to payback that debt. That's why there is a 77% of clients who make reapeat purchases as the book reports. Not surprisingly the case description mentions the criticism "that Casas Bahia simply exploits the poor and charges them exorbitant interest rates", but neglects to present a due explanation of why this is not truth, and simply disregards the cristicism.

5. Finally, Mr. Prahalad is extremely optimistic. At he end of Chapter 6 and in his own words: "I have no doubt that the elimination of poverty and deprivation is possible by 2020". This prophecy speaks by itself about the reliability of the analysis. And again, let's remember that extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. All the book presents is anecdotal evidence, which is not proof as any scientist knows, and the framework presented has no predictive power, much less to assert that poverty will end by 2020.

Unquestionably an excellent business book, and a very innovative one, but just for that, business. That's why to me it only deserves 3 stars. On the other hand, not much value-added in there for doing real sustainable development across the board, as the author insinuates and some of the readers think, and certainly not much for real poverty eradication. For that outrageous addition to the book's title I took the other 2 stars. The "Erradicating poverty through profits" part of the book's title should be erased, so the book really deserves the 5 stars most reviewers gave to it (and as the previous reviewer rightly complained, the cases were really awfully edited for the paperback edition, even with repeated sentences). Definitely this book is not recommended if you are serious about new ideas for sustainable development. For a real book on that subject, read the recently publicated The Bottom Billion: Why the Poorest Countries are Failing and What Can Be Done About It by Paul Collier, though its scope refers mainly to very poor African countries, it is an example of a serious and proper approach to the problem of eradicating poverty. To understand the complexities of promoting development, you may also read Making Globalization Work by Joseph Stiglitz. These two books will clearly ilustrate why "The Fortune at the BOP" is not a book on development, and absolutely, no Nobel Prize is deserved.

Interesting and insightful read, not just for business people
By Bernardo Margulis
I learned about CK Prahalad and the BOP about two years ago doing a school project. I'm a graphic designer, so my approach is far removed from the typical business person's. After this project, I used this book to guide my senior project (design equivalent of a thesis), in which I made up a company that served the BOP in Venezuela and created a brand and packaging system for it. As a non-business person, it was sometimes challenging to follow the book, but it was not overwhelming. I agree with other comments that say that it was a bit technical (especially with all the abbreviations), but it was still approachable.

I'd recommend this not just for business people and entrepreneurs. Poverty is a world-wide issue and this book shows new and innovative ways of dealing with it. We can find uses for this theory in many different realms and disciplines and the theory forces us to think outside of the box. I was especially appreciative of the non-subsidies and the notion that poverty alleviation can come from sustainably profitable operations. I also like the idea of environmental sustainability as a must when dealing with the vast majority of the world as consumers.

I would also recommend "Out of Poverty" by Paul Polack. I liked Prahalad's position better, as Polack falls short in addressing exclusively money as a poverty factor and disregards life quality as something we should address; something that Prahalad does address. But Polack addresses an even poorer segment of the world and we can learn from both theories.
